muzzles on certain breeds in California

I just watched a newscast that said California is trying to pass a statute that says certain breeds that include the pit bull, rottweilers and doberman pinchers must wear muzzles when they leave the owners property...Sounds like a witch hunt and I think if this is what they want it should be all dogs not just certain types..

Let me know what you think..

Where can I protest this? Is there going to be a public hearing? Is this all of california or just a certain region?

I've posted this before but I'll wonder out loud again. Why is it that whenever any country talks about a breed ban or muzzle law on large dogs, that the GSD is never mentioned, yet they are right up there, actually I beleive ahead of all other dogs in total bites?
Now I am a GSD fan but, how is it that despite having that high number of bites all we hear about is banning rotts, dobermans, etc. There has to be some political pull for the GSD, I can't think of any other reason for this!

I agree. Why is it always the rottweiler who gets the bad "press". If a law is passed for one, it should apply to all. Poodles can bite too! I know someone who has a scar on the back of their ankle from a poodle bite! In fact, the little ones are always the ones who are vicious! I live in Indiana, and am not sure about the laws anywhere else, but am tired of rotties always being the bad guy. If people knew how smart they really are... they should worry about the pit bulls, and other breeds. No one ever hears about them. I'm tired of it. Wouldn't it be interesting to see from vets or news stories, or some kind of reports of ALL of the dog bites and what breeds have been involved. LUV ROTTIES. :) ZEKES MOM :D

Hey, Hey now just because our breed is under fire we cant be trying to include the GSDs into things, the object is to keep this from happening not try to bring other breeds down along with our own. And yes the other way of looking at things is if one breed has to do it then they all should. Thats when you will see a real uproar. I had a fox terrier growing up and she bit more people, I have two rotties(well just lost one to the soon to be ex) and neither of them have bitten anyone. And my female is a fear bitter to boot.

Personally where I walk my male( who is close to out weighing me) there are a lot of people with their labs and foofoo dogs that have far less control over their dogs than I do. And Im the one who has to worry about their unleashed dog, because of course it will be the rottie who started it :(.

Something took place up in New Hampshire, Im unsure about the outcome but I know a lot of the very wealthy Dobe owners were heading up there to see that the bill didnt pass.

Big piece of advice that always goes unheard, Beware of who you vote for!!!!!!!

And Steve, as far as political pull, of course they do, who do you think are the majority of the boys in blue's partners?
(nothing against any of you boys in blue out there, I know plenty of them and their dogs)

MAGNUM,
You misunderstood my point, as I said in my post I am a GSD fan!! I was just trying to point out a fact. Actually I wish that the rottweiler had the same political pull as the GSD!!
In my opinion, the only way to stop, or reduce the number of attacks each year is not by breed specific legislation, but by making owners criminally responsible for the actions of their dogs, whatever breed they may be!

Lorhel, If you think that Pit Bulls aren't as badly looked upon as the rott, you are sadly mistaken. Even our humane society has adopted out rotts that seem/are friendly but will not adopt out pit bulls, regardless of how friendly they are. It dosen't matter, they're pit bulls. The rott is not the only dog held in the public eye as being agressive/demon dogs, the pit also has that same rap. Janet

I don't think anyone was saying pits are not in the same boat it is always the same story some tough guy buys a rott a pit or a doberman makes it ugly then when it bites the news and politicians lump all the dogs with a bad reputation into it even though that breed wasn't involved...I don't even remember the last dog bite story on the news that didn't show old footage of a pit or rott attacking sombody..This is why the dogs get a bad name because people see the news and keep seeing the same thing over and over but are too brainless to understand when the newscaster said it was a mixed breed or whatever dog it was all the people see is a pit or rott attacking....My point was if some dogs have to wear muzzles all dogs should have to wear muzzles..

Yes, I saw on the news that they are talking of a law for all dogs out in public to wear a muzzle here in California. This all started when a La Crosse coach (female) in San Francisco was killed by two bull mastiffs outside her apt door -- they belonged to her neighbor. (story is, when she came out her door she was warned by the person who was with them to go back in until they got them dogs inside because they were growling. I believe they were on leashes. She supposedly refused and came out anyway.) The news tried to say they were rottweiler-bull mastiffs at first!! Go figure!! I think that if a person, an animal or anything were acting odd like that I would go back inside!! Especially if they warned me. Then a day or two later here in the Los Angeles area and in a bad area of town, the news had a story about a rott attacking someone. But who knows what kind of dog it really was!! Another day the press called it a pitt bull, then a rott-pitt bull mix. We all now how the press misrepresents. Anyway, as I told my husband, here goes more bad press for the rotts. We have two darling rotts and I really worry them and what people do out of ignorance!!! They are inside and outside. And outside in the backyard the fence has a double heavy chain with two locks holding it. They are such sweet loving, gentle dogs. About a year ago, a neighbor tried to complain that they made noise, barked. WEll all of our neighbors have dogs and of all sizes. Well, I wrote back to the animal control and told them I have been keeping a log on whose dog barks when and it isnt my dogs.... they left me alone. I think it was rottweiler discrimination. Some fool intimidated! I had a Scotty, who was tougher then our Rotts. Would take them on and come out ahead. Now, he would more likely bite someone before they would. The Edison man jumped our fence and all they would do is go up and get petted. Such mild dogs. People should be more scared of the small dogs. Seen more chihuahuas bite then Rotts. California has such goofy laws already and now talking about muzzle laws!!

This was voted down 5-1 last week. There will NOT be a law requiring muzzles to be worn in California.

Joyce I think I saw the same story out her on the east coast unless there is another attack on a lacross coach in the California area. The dogs I believe were Cane Corso's and there was a long story behind the owners of those dogs. They were caring for those dogs for a prisoner that was serving a life sentence.

Only the male dog attacked. The female stayed behind. When I saw the news here the women was just trying to get into her apartment when the male broke free from the owner. In the process of the attack the owner of the dog was telling the women to remain still (yeah hello) because she could not get the dog off. The dog bit into the Lacross coaches neck killing her. There was a history of these dogs snapping at this women and the owners blamed the attack on the fact that the women wore a certain perfume or was on steroids and that is what caused the attack.

Is this similar to the story you are referring to?

The dogs inquestion were not Cane Corso they were Presa Canario. If those two owners are not held responsible for what happened to that woman, there is truly no justice.

I live in the SF Bay Area and am so tired of hearing about this. The Muzzle law was only for San Francisco, but it was voted down. As for bad Reps. Pits, Rottis & Dobies all have bad reputations. Although I think here Pits Bulls have the worst rep. There are many SPCA's that have an AUTOMATIC Euthanization policy for Pits. Regardless of temperment. So needless to say all the rescues are just inundated with Pits. I agree, it sucks that due to SOME dogs of a certain breed attacking somone, then the entire breed is tainted. Having a Rotti/Doberman mix has made finding rental housing a pain. It's hard enough with just a dog, but when they ask what kind, there is really no good way to say it. You say "Black and Tan", Rott mix or Doberman Mix and everyone automatically thinks mean/vicious dog. We tried just saying that she was a mutt, but that want to know what kind of mix. We got a lot of, sorry, we can't be responsible for letting a "Big, Mean dog into the neighborhood." Someone even asked how many people has she tried to attack. They didn't believe me when I said None and that she'd rather lick you than bite. We even tried to talk people into just meeting her. We finally found someone who didn't care what kind of dog she was, as long as we paid the pet deposit and agreed to repair any damage if any she did. (Which she has caused none) Anyway enough babble ing. :)
