Rottie Attack In Nashville area

I just heard on our local ABC news channel there was an attack in the my area (Nashville)by a Rott involving a little girl. As it is not 10 pm here yet the story isn't on as of now. I will keep everyone posted as soon as I get details and circumstances..

Here's what I got so far..The dog was an 80 lb Rott mix, who bit a 2 year old child in the face. Reporter said she had gotten a report the the dog was eating when approached by the child and that is when the bite occured. The dog has now been quarantined for the standard 10 days. The father was quoted as saying the dog had always gotten along with the child. The news station should do a follow up on this story in the next couple days. I'll keep you posted.

I would like to think it was an accident that the two year old went up to the dog while he was eating. Even though I can mess with Sheena while she is eating, take food, give food, etc. I would not let any child close to her or anyother dog while they are eating.

Just thought I would put my 2 cents in about feeding. My oldest dogs I had before my daughter was born so she has been told that it is ok to go with Mom to feed the dogs I fill the bowls, and carry them over she makes them sit and stay, I hand her the bowl and she sits it down all supervised. But she is never allowed to bother them while they eat. I'm a little different her than others though I think because our newest pup is really my daughter's dog. She is allowed to feed her dog and she and I both put our hands in the bowl and take the food away again this is all supervised but I want the pup to know without a doubt that she is not my daugter's equal and that anything my daughter says or does goes. If the pup talks back to my 3 year old daughter she gets a stern correction and the food removed until she's ready to behave. Just what we do, but I never would have let my daughter bother an 80 pound dog while eating at 2.

I also have messed with Atti's food while he is eating and even when he has treats such as bones, I started this from the very first day we got him mainly to get him used to it in case the event arose where one of the kids happened to get close to him. He is very good about letting us do this, we went through a spell awhile back where he thought he was going to growl at me one night when I went to set fresh water next to his food bowl while he was eating and he learned really quick that it would not be tolerated, and never since has he pulled that again!! HOWEVER>>>>>I still do not let anyone approach him or his food while he is eating!!!! I hope the little girl is OK!!!! Please update us on the outcome!!!!

When I was a kid (around 10) I was reaching down to put a collar on one of our dogs while he was eating. Hound dog of all things. Just goes to show its not always the Rottie. Me I would never let a 2 year old around a dog that is eating. It is not worth taking the chance. Our dog had never done that before nor did she ever do it again after that but you just never know. I hope the little girl will be O.K.

I just learned that the girl had undergone several hours of surgery(ies)for her face and in stable condition. From what I gather the bite was quite severe. As of now I don't have any children so I have never had to deal with a child feeding or disturbing any of my dogs while they are eating. My dogs have absolutely no problem with me messing around in their food bowls. I feed BARF so everytime I reach into their bowls they just think I'm adding some goodies. But I think if I had kids I would approach feeding the same way "godfreyc" does. Please keep this little girl in your thoughts. She is only 2.

Sasha is eight months old, turning nine months this week. I have three children ages 13, 11, and 6 years old. Since day one I have let them feed her. I have also instructed them to remove food from her bowl while she eats and also to take bones from her while she chews on them. I did this to desensitize Sasha and it seems to have worked. Whenever one of my sons takes food out of her bowl, she just ignores them, like oh well there is plenty more. If they take her bone, she just looks at them like "hey, what did you do that for? can I pleeeeaaaaaase have it back." Never once has she ever shown signs of disapproval or aggression.

How fortunate for your children that you have a dog this works with.

None of the news stations in this area have done a follow up on this story :( However there was another story they covered about yet another attack. A couple took their child to a friends house who had a rott chained up in the back yard. While they were inside the girl (about 8 yrs old) wanted to go outside and play with "the fuzzy dog". They let her go out there unattended. 15 minutes later the parents went to check on the girl and found her lying face down in the grass next to the dog. From what they could gather, the little girl tried to take the dog's food bowl away. I don't know how they knew this since the girl was left unattended with this dog. The owner says that he will now have the dog PTS. :(

"The owner says that he will now have the dog PTS."

Because of the owners and parents negligence the dog will be killed. 1. Dog was chained up outside; 2. Dog was obviously not trained properly; & 3. The child was allowed to play with the dog unattended.

Worse part is the owner will probably go out and get a new puppy.

sometimes it is so difficult to know what to do, because their are so many varied ideas on training and what you should and shouldn't do, I decided that when we got our pup that I would allow all three of my children,13,9 and 6 to feed her so that she was used to children being around her bowl and was never threatened by them. My kids can pick her food up, and she eats it out of their hands, it doesn't bother her in the least; however with someone other than a family member CocoShae may react differently, so I would be very cautious with any other children other than my own around her at feeding time.

He probably will go out and get another pup. I had a guy stop me in wal mart the other day and comment on the large amount of chicken in my cart. when my bf Rob told him it was for the dogs, the guy asked what kind..we told him rotts and he told us he just had his 15 month old female Rott pup PTS because she bit his little boy. Then he asked us if we had a male or female and we replied "both". Then the guy asks me how much my puppies are going to be b/c he wanted one.. I told him they were all fixed. He got angry and asked me why we would mutilate an animal like that This time I was not at a loss for words and I replied, "So people like you don't end up with one of my puppies" :) Sometimes it seems like the harder we try, the more ignorance abounds.......

Ugh. . .the guy sounds like a candidate for being neutered himself.
