You are absolutely right; the thing is, not all police officers are professional and uphold the law, or even follow the law. Here we have an example of a "trigger happy" cop, who did not hesitate to enter a private property without legal justification, and then shot a dog inside the owner's property!!! How stupid and senseless that can be?!... I guess that is it!

Re: Rottie Shot and killed in its own yard

It seems to me like a lot of people lately are using guns to solve their animal issues. I read on another forum about a man who shot a dalmation in his backyard. While that case is much different as the dog was in his yard, he claims to have been firing a warning shot. He fired off 5 shots. And the dog's owner was right there trying to get her dog, from my understanding.

Police officers are held to a higher standard then the average joe. We assume that because their job is to "protect and serve" they are not as easily rattled and are trained to use their weapon only as a last resort. To allow them to behave otherwise is to say that they can get their weapon out and use it anytime they want.

Kind of makes you wonder, if this guy's kid was being pummelled by the bully down the road, would he take his gun out and shoot the kid?

I too would be pressing charges and sueing the police officer if the law allows for this to happen.

But on a side note can I ask about declawing cats? I have never heard of this and wonder why it is done? Is it common? Not passing judgement etc but like I said I have never heard of this in the land of OZ.

Re: Rottie Shot and killed in its own yard

Not sure if you guys noticed but the OP posted this 2 years ago.

Mick declawing is where the claws of a cat are surgically removed. Largely for indoor cats who scratch everything in site. But some people will declaw a cat then let the poor defenseless thing out to fend for him/herself. Run a search on the net it is very highly controversial..........

LavenderRott this is a peole mistake an issue not a gun issue. In these situations if they had not had a gun they would have found some other way to act irrisponsible..........

Kinda goes with the saying theres an idiot in every crowd........

Re: Rottie Shot and killed in its own yard

I know this happened 2 years ago. My question is: Does anyone have any update as to what happened to that cop? I really hope he was taken to court by the owner of the killed Rottweiler.

I just can imagine what I would have done to that cop if that would happen to me. We've only had our Gina 3 days and I already love her. I hate when cops are overusing their power. There's nothing worse.

Any comments on this? Do you think it was ok for him to use his gun on his neighbors dog during an attack (even thought it wasn't on his property)? Personally, I think it is a good example of why not to declaw a cat. No survival skills.
He had no right to shoot that Rottie whatsoever, the cat went into the Rotties yard period. If that were my Rottie and it happened to me, I would have shot that cop dead in my yard.

I hope he looses his job and faces civil suit.

He should've used his mace that one officer is required to carry, it would've been effective enough.Even a hose would've been useful , most Rottweilers hate water.

Sounds like to me yet another case of wrongful trespass, this time with a person that was in an authoritive postion.

You got this right!

Wouldn't want to have to depend on him during 'crunch time'.

This thread was first posted on July 2, 2002 so I doubt you'll hear anything else about it unless you research.

We have a couple of cats, and surprisingly the one cat "Black Cat" can stand his ground and make the dogs back off. Medusa my pit loves to lick the cats, sort of gives them a saliva bath.
Dogs are unpredictable when it comes to cats, I've seen dogs growl and bark and run after cats and once they caught up to them they play with them or lay down near them. But don't always think they will do that, close supervision is a must especially with big dogs.

Re: Rottie Shot and killed in its own yard

Most cops think they can do whatever they want and get a way with it, I'm sorry but its the truth. When is a dog safe on its own property. I'm so angry I can hardly type. Here is were it would be nice if we could sue not only for the value of the dog but for pain and suffering the same as if he shot the child that lived next store. Oh, god I'm just boiling.

Come to think of it, you did say CA. In a landmark case in CA not too long ago a judge cleared the way for a pain and suffering suite. That means once its on the books any lawyer should be able to use that as a reference to their case. I hope this guy looses his job, his house and anything else they can take from him.

Re: Rottie Shot and killed in its own yard

Over the past few weeks I have found a Chihuahua in my yard nearly once a week. It is from a few houses up and I have seen the kids searching for thier dog about 2-3 times a week. I got so fed up yesterday (a bad day to boot), that I went to the house and spoke with the mother. I told her I was concerned for their dogs well being, it is out runnning the in the neighbourhood and could get run over, or injured in my yard if my dogs are out.
She apoligized and said that they have been trying to figure out how the little guy is getting out and they are trying to keep him from running.
How far do I go with this, I dont want to get in her face about this, but it is starting to really tick me off. Is my next course of action to call the animal control, maby a few words from them will motivate them.
If it were my dog, he would be on a leash while out so he could never leave my property, or I would fix the fencing so that he would have to dig 2-3 feet under to get out.

You need a licence to drive, but anyone can have kids or a dog!!!!!

Re: Rottie Shot and killed in its own yard

I have a neighbor with two Dachsunds that they allow to roam. We live on a VERY busy street. I am sick to death of picking up my neighbors small dogs and cats out of the road and having to return them, dead to their owners. So, in a fit of rage I printed out the local leash law ordinance and took it over to them. I explained my concerns and told them that if I EVER saw their dogs running loose unsupervised that I was going to call AC. The dogs are now supervised. Sometimes being a B**** is the only way to get things done.
