Loose Rottweiler Shot and Killed

I was just reading the Police Beat in our local paper, The Star. It lists some of the police reports and arrests in surrounding suburbs. In Homewood, Il. :

A Homewood patrol officer shot and killed a loose Rottweiler March 19 in the 17900 block of Cherrywood, police said. Wayne T. Carter, the dog's owner, was charged with three counts of missing animal tags and one count of dog at large, police said. Two more Rottweilers were trying to escape from Carter's nearby yard, police said.

The link for the paper is www.starnewspapers.com I couldn't find the police beat on the site. I did send The Star an email telling them how sad I was to read this and asking why the dog was shot. Some months back in the suburb of Flossmoor, Homewood's neighbor, a woman who tried to help a Rottie that was in traffic was attacked....so naturally I am wondering if Homewood shot the dog simply because it was a Rottie or if this dog was attacking.

The newspaper published my letter today inquiring why the Rottie was shot and killed. This doesn't answer my question as to why this happened, but it will bring more attention to the incident and also I did get something positive in there about our breed.

That's awesome they published your letter! :)

I hope to get an answer as to why this Rottweiler was shot. I know this sort of thing happens.

My neighbor owned a nice Dobie. She had a 6 foot chain link fence all around her back yard where she kept the dog. One day someone drove by and just shot the dog in the back yard because it was a Dobie... The family was devastated.

It doesn't surprise me that the officer could've shot the dog just because it was a Rottweiler. It's sad.

Hope that's not the case. :(

It would be nice if someone would reply to your concerns.

The local paper came out today...comes out on Thursday and Sunday. Nothing in it about the Rottie that was shot and killed. A friend in Agility class told me she wrote in too. She has an American Eskimo and her next door neighbor has a Rottie...the two play together all the time.:)

We are going to contact afew people this week that might know something about it. If we find out any info I will be sure to post it.

I still haven't found out why that loose Rottie was shot and killed, but I have to applaud the Star Newspaper for publishing three Letters to the Editor on the subject. My letter was published on April 4. My classmate at dog training school, Cindy, wrote a letter and it was published on April 11, although when doing a search on Rottweiler it didn't show up with other letters. Today I looked on the Opinion Page and there is another letter pertaining to the incident. On the Rottweiler search it shows this letter as being in the paper on April 14, but that is an error as it was just published in today's paper. So.....if there is anyone else out there who would like to write a Letter to the Editor it sure would be nice to keep this going. Maybe then they will run a story. To see the latest letter go to www.starnewspapers.com and do a search on Rottweiler.
