I lost my best buddy today

Took my dog to see the neurologist and they did x-ray of the chest and MRI of the spine. They found a tumor pressing on his spine. I had him put down at 3pm today.

I lost my best buddy today, and I have never felt worse in my life. I am doing anything right now to keep my mind off it but keep breaking down.

My dog was a trooper. I couldn't even get him in the car this morning because of his rear paralysis. He knew I was struggling to pick him to get him to the car so he lifted himself up and literally dragged himself 25 feet to the car passenger door on his own while I moved to prep the rear seat. Next thing I know he is by my side like it was nothing. I could not believe my eyes. I lifted his rear end up with a towel while he gave it his all to get in. He loved car rides.

This dog was the most amazing friend. He literally saved our family from 2 rattlesnakes in our backyard. He has kept our rodent population in check. I never knew how he caught them.

I will miss him like no other. Regardless of my mood, he would always greet me with a smile and his nub wagging. He was even doing this when he was sick.

I was not able to say proper good bye to him like I wish. I got hold of the terrible news while I was at work and had him put to sleep since he was already under from the MRI. I didn't want them to wake him and have to go through going under again.

I will get his ashes and he will be with me always. Please do say a prayer for him tonight.

RIP my best friend. You will never know how much you meant to me.

I'm so sorry. You were there for him, just as he was for you. You both will be in my thoughts.

Re: Rottie can't stand or walk???

I am so very, very sorry for the loss of your heart dog.
I didn't want to post earlier because I didn't want to scare you - I was afraid a tumor was going to be the diagnosis.
My Sheena had the same as your boy. Sheena's rear end/back legs also went paralytic -overnight. The xrays came back okay but you can't always see a tumor on the spine by xrays. Vet said if we elected to do the MRI (while she was under) he would want to do surgery right then. Vet could not guarantee Sheena would walk again, there was only a 50/50 chance the surgery would help anyway.
Because of her age (10 yrs. 9 mos.) we didn't know she would even survive the surgery and the post op would have been just too painful. We couldn't put her through that.
So we decided to medicate with prednisone to reduce the inflammation, antibiotics, etc. but the meds didn't work and she got progressively worse which our vet said confirmed his diagnosis.
I just wanted to tell you about Sheena and let you know you did everything you could for your boy - it was just out of your hands.
Letting your boy go while he was under was the best thing you could have done.
I feel so badly for you and your family. I feel your pain.
RIP big boy - fly high with the angels. You are in very good company.

Re: Rottie can't stand or walk???

Thanks everyone for the posts. They really mean a lot to me.

Jenny - Sorry as well for your Sheena. I did not know anything about Rotties getting cancer until this site. I was really thinking about a slipped disk as I already got an estimate today for the disk surgery same time as I got the estimate for the MRI. When I got the call informing me it was cancer, I was in total shock.

I am sad he did not get to live a long life, and I was not able to say good bye. But I know he is no longer suffering.

Re: I lost my best buddy today

David,

I am so very very sorry for your loss. What a beautiful boy you had, both inside and outside.

My hear aches for you.

I will say a prayer for him tonight and one for you also, what a hard decision it is to make, but you did what was best for him. He is no longer suffering or in pain.

I too have my dogs ashes and he will be with me always.

~*sending you hugs~*

So sorry to hear the sad news.
Makes it really tough when you could not say good-bye.
