Re: I lost my best buddy today

So sorry to hear of another beautiful one lost to cancer.

I know exactly how you feel about not getting to say goodbye. My Annie was in surgery when the vet called from the OR to tell me what he was finding. I chose not to let her wake up.... but I have felt badly ever since about having her there all day waiting for surgery, and then never getting to say goodbye. I'm getting over it, but I know how you feel. Try to take comfort in knowing that you gave him a wonderful life and did everything you could for him. He's one beautiful Rottie angel watching over you until he can see you again.

Re: I lost my best buddy today

Thanks everyone.

It was a rough night. I feel guilt for maybe not trying to remove the cancer and give him a chance. I know the neurologist told me I made the correct decision but the guilt will not go away. The last thing I did not want was to have that horrible disease come back and cause anymore pain or him having to go through chemo. He was a fighter and I feel like maybe I did not give him that chance. The guilt is heavy nonetheless.

I just wish I can play with one more time and to scratch behind his ears like he loved.

Re: I lost my best buddy today

Please don't feel guilty. The surgery would not have been a guarantee that your boy would have even recovered or walked again. A 50/50 chance is not that great considering the post op, pain and rehab he would have had to endure. It would have been awful to put him through all that pain only then to find he would never walk again and have to put him to sleep. To me that would have been too hard to handle.
I am sure we all have had "what ifs". Believe the surgeon when he said you made the right decision - he has seen enough to know.
Having gone through this myself I have a good idea how you are feeling right now.
Although "you" have a great deal of pain, remember your boy is not in any pain now and running free and happy.
It is always harder on the ones left behind - but one day you will be together again...

Re: I lost my best buddy today

What a beautiful boy!!! Dragging himself to the car OMG.... what a trooper. Rotties are like that though...they seem to know what they need to do...and they will move heaven and earth to accomplish it...god bless them.
I hear and feel your pain and am so very sorry. You know you did the right thing but that doesn't help much right now. Know he is always with you...love does not die...watching over and still caring for you...till the day you are reunited on the other side.
RIP Brave Boy...you can run like the wind now and forever more.

Please don’t second guess yourself. You did the right thing. Sometimes the things we want to do to our dogs to fix them, to make them feel better, to help them live longer—invasive procedures, surgery, treatments like chemo—we do for us, not for our canine companions.

I hope you find consolation in knowing your dog lived the best possible life because he was your dog, loved and treasured by you.

Re: I lost my best buddy today

Please do not feel guilty. I am sure from above he is looking over you and hoping you would not feel all this sorrow you are feeling now. He is free from pain and in a better world now. As your best buddy, I am sure he is watching you and all he wants for you is to feel well and be serene, just as you wanted him to be well and free of pain.

Re: I lost my best buddy today

Thanks again for all the kind words. They do mean a lot to me.

It was very weird yesterday. I have been a Christian all my life and didn't believe pets go to heaven since this was what I was told when I was young with no reason. Even my wife told me I would reunite with Hemi in heaven but told her stubbornly that pets don't go there when they pass. I consider myself stubborn and was set on my beliefs.

But yesterday, I was feeling real down, guilty, and just breaking down. I couldn't get rid of the guilt. For some reason, something inside of me was urging me to google pets and heaven. Next thing I know, I was researching if pets did go to heaven and slowly my view changed. I now truly believe I will meet him there. I see him running through the fields in heaven with no more pain and waiting for me. This truly comforted me. I believe that God works in miraculous ways and this was one to calm and let my guilt go and to assure me that I will see him again.

I am sooo sorry about your baby!! I lost mine yesterday and know the heartache and numbness you are going through right now!! Try and take it day by day and know that when it's your turn to go he'll be there greeting you with a smile and his nub wagging like it's never wagged before!! Stay strong and try and keep yourself busy!! I am again soooo sorry for your loss

Re: I lost my best buddy today

David, I am very sorry for your loss. I know how it feels as I have lost 2 Rotties in the last 4 years, recently in Oct. my Ceasar had a tumor at his brainstem which effected his mobility to walk. I had to put him down after 3 days in the hospital trying everything to reverse this. Your baby will always be with you and the bond we form with our Rottweilers can never be broken or forgotten. He will always love you too as I am sure he proved to you right up to the end. God Bless you and know he is in good hands and with lots of friends. Debbie
