Falco dies of parvo

I received an email today from the rescue I volunteer for...they were trying to get a two year old rotti, Falco, into their program. His owners had dumped him in a shelter...he became "depressed" and was moved to another shelter that works closely with my rescue. It was then discovered he had a severe case of parvo. Sadly Falco could not be saved. Falco had been up-to-date with all his innoculations...including all his puppy shots. Falco is a sad reminder that these shots do not always protect our breed. Hopefully his story will remind us that dogs we think are protected against this devasting disease can still die from it.
He was a sweet, lovely boy.

Re: Falco dies of parvo

What a timely note. Yesterday I took Samson and Gretchen in to get their bordetella shots since I'm doing a test boarding soon before the real vacation happens. I had already talked with the vet about starting titers on both, but she brought up that Rotties are not a breed necessarily competent for staving off diseases, including parvo.

She said she's seen rotties 5 or 6 years old come down with the disease. She recommended they get vaccinated again for it so I did. Now I'm glad I did.

Rest easy Falco...
