senseless death

I never met this boy but wanted to memoralize in some way his passing....my vet called yesterday. A family had brought in their two year old german shepherd to be euthanized. They had been doing work on their home and no longer allowed the dog in the house. He went from being a part of their family to being limited to the yard and garage. In their words he became "too needy" and had started pottying in the garage. The husband had agreed to let the vet place the dog so I was called since I foster for a gsd rescue. The vet kept emphasizing how gorgeous he was, that he was VERY friendly, had obedience training, raised with kids and two ankle biters, was neutered and up-to-date on shots and probably had a "mild" case of separation anxitey.
Fifteen minutes later she called me back...the wife was "put out" that they had attempted to override what SHE had decided and told them she wanted her dog euthanized. When I got called back, this boy was already dead. I cannot even begin to understand why anyone, when given a good option for a dog they no longer want, decides to kill their dog instead.

I think it has to do with a person seeing their dog as "property" (to buy, use & throw out at will) which is so foreign to those of us who love our pets so dearly.

Re: senseless death

May that dog RIP. I'm a firm believer in what goes around, comes around. Apparently this isn't that uncommon unfortunately because my vet told a similar story a few years ago.

Sickening! I wonder if the vet could've placed this dog without telling owner. I am sure the owner didn't want to bury their dog or anything. I certainly would've be able to tell a lie to save this animal as it wouldn't have hurt anyone, not that I would be worried about THIS owner. I am totally disgusted.

I had thought this too but would think the vet could loose her license if she did this and got caught. When she called me back she was clearly upset.

I am sure the vet was upset. My vet would not have done this though. He would have definitely told her to go elsewhere and given her both barrels. A well placed boot in the you know where on the way out wouldn't have gone astray either!

Re: senseless death

My vet works in a practice with multiple vets...she does not own the practice so I'm sure since the primary vet (owner of practice) is ok with euthanizing healthy animals, she has to follow "policy".

Re: senseless death

People can be so sickening. It is appalling how people feel their pets are disposable. What a lovely thing to be teaching their kids too. Let me go take another blood pressure pill before I bust a vein!

Re: senseless death

Sick. It's too bad it is illegal to PTS some people.
How horrible. I don't think anyone even likes putting down an ill dog, let alone a healthy and loving one. Why is it even legal to put down a young loving dog because someone wants it done? It seems that she should have been very grateful that someone wanted to take this guy and give him a chance at a loving and forever home.
I wonder how long the boot dogs have left?
Good thing to teach your kids too.
GRRRRRR, I don't even have high blood pressure, but pass me one of those pills please.

I know of a vet that would have done the same thing, my daughter in law. She first would have offered to pay for the dog and if the owner wouldn't accept the money, then she would have told this _itch where to go and don't let the door hit her in the butt.

I'm giving myself some condolence in this rotten situation by thinking that this dog owner did this dog a favor. If they had such disdain for it to PTS, can you imagine what they would have done if they just forgotten about him period. So sometimes, death isn't all that bad. OK, my simple logic trying to make a wrong into a right!! This just ticks me off to no end.

RIP big beautiful boy.

Re: senseless death

I feel so sorry for her kids. There seems to be no respect for life in that house and these kids will learn this. Thank goodness for my parents who taught me otherwise which I am passing onto my son. This is STILL infuriating me!
sweetlee, forget the blood pressure pills, I'm looking for something a lot stronger! I'll pass 'em on
JoJo, good for your daughter in law. My vet wouldn't put mom's old gal Mindy to sleep about 6 mths before we finally did. He didn't think she was ready- and he was right! She was eating, drinking, everything else was normal except she was very slow getting around. Mom thought she was in pain but the vet didn't think so. My sister and I sat in his office debating for over 1 hr! (He is VERY patient!) He felt it was just signs of old age and didn't want to put her down until she was truly ready. We had another 6 great months with her because of this vet.
