Urn size?

Don't quite know if this is the appropriate location to post this question, and I'm sorry if this offends.

Unfortunately, I need to produce and urn. Rather than purchase one, we are going to make one. May I get suggestions on appropriate dimensions for the remains of a medium sized rottweiler (75-80 lbs)? Also, does anybody have some good websites that give good urn designs?

Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Re: Urn size?

Well, since Luna wouldn't be offended, I can't see any reason why I should be...

Luna was 94 lbs and she is now in an urn that is about the size of a quart of paint (and very pretty paint - isn't that right, Luna?) - (she says, "you betcha!")

Here's a book urn that I like a lot:

I also have a pendant urn that is set with a moonstone that contains a pinch of ash and a pinch of fur from my girl. I haven't taken it off since I got it.

Re: Urn size?

Mojave was 85-87lbs before the cancer struck. If memory serves, he dropped to about 79-81lbs when we let him go. His urn is 6.5 inches tall. The vet's office arranged the cremation with a third party so I did not get to pick out his urn. To my joy, he returned to me in the most beautiful turquoise ceramic urn I've ever seen....and since turquoise was always my choice in color for my boy, I suppose he's pretty happy too knowing it made me smile.

Re: Urn size?

Sadly, we have 5 urns now on the mantle. Lucy (95 lbs) and Merlin (130 lbs) are in what looks like the size and shape of a round 1 lb cookie tin but decorated with scrolls and hearts on the top. Nimue (95-100 lbs) is in a similar sized tin. And Mariposa (80 lbs) is in a square flowery tin that is about 4" on each side and 6" tall. Moose (115-120 lbs) is in a wooden box that is about the size of Mari's tin, but on its side with mitered edges and a little base. Lucy, Mari & Nimue's tins have extra room inside. Merlin's is packed pretty tightly. And so is Moose's.

I keep saying I'm going to plant them beneath roses, but my husband won't let me. He dusts them off, arranges them with their dog tags on top, and talks to them when he thinks nobody is watching.

Re: Urn size?

Chivas came back to be in a flowered tin box about the size of a med coffee can. I have been unable to open it ( i dont want to ) but I wanted her in something nicer, I ordered a beautiful wooden box that has her name and dates on a gold plaque on the front and a place to put a picture of her on the top. The tin fit in it perfectly which I am very grateful, as I was going to have to take her to the vet for them to do it, I just cannot make myself open the urn up not hers or any of the other 3 I have, 2 other dogs and 1 bird. When my time comes, I have specified that all of my pets and my ashes will be taken up in a plane and let loose over the Chesapeake Bay.

Re: Urn size?

When I picked up Sheena's ashes, they were in a round can like container which I kept. Before they cremated her, they made a paw print out of plaster of paris and put the dates of her birth and death. The package came with a beautiful card that had a prayer written inside, there were ribbons to celebrate her life. I put her leash, favorite collar and tags all on a shelf in a glass curio with her ashes. The weird thing is that Lola sits and looks up at the shelf and tilts her head back and forth. I know this didn't answer your question but, I just wanted to add this.

Maybe not exactly, but it is still nice. I love the plaster of paris pawprint. That's way cool.

Re: Urn size?

Marlene, Charleigh is in an oak urn about the size of a hard cover novel but about 3 times as deep. She was very close in size to Ruby...just a tad taller. I also have a pendant urn I keep close to my heart...it came from Whisper in the heart Lin is just most awesome to work with if you need her...and she's here in California.

Not sure if you got my email...but....I'm just speechless.

And...OFFEND? I don't think so. Make cry? Yes...absolutely.......

Re: Urn size?

Yes, Beth, I got your email and I thank you, very much.

I'm sure most everybody that has read this thread has figured out that I recently lost one of my dogs. (Well, duh, since I'm asking about urn sizes... I don't think THAT far ahead. )

My wonderful girl, Ruby, had to be put out of her misery this past Sunday morning. She was only 6 1/2 years old. She got visibly sick only on the 10th of June. We had a little trouble figuring out what was wrong with her and by the time we found out she had cancer (hemangiosarcoma on the spleen and a couple Autoimmune disorders) she was too far along to effectively help her. Almost nobody knew she was sick, so it was probably quite the dropped bomb when I informed friends and family. The outpouring of condolences has been very touching.

As I told her breeder, we accomplished so much, but we had so much more to do together.

Ruby is the first dog I've decided to have cremated and keep. (I've got quite the pet cemetery on my property.) So, the whole urn issue is a new one for me. I appreciate all the help given here. Thank you.

Re: Urn size?

Marlene, I can still see her next you, head up, prancing along on the most beautiful heeling pattern I'd ever seen from a Rottie/owner team. She will forever be by your side, smiling like she did that day I met you both at the Hayward shows for the first time.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

Re: Urn size?

Marlene, Ruby's titles speak volumes of her work ethic. What a wonderful partner she must have been. I am so sorry, and can only imagine what a huge loss this is for you.

Re: Urn size?

I am very sorry for you loss.

I found a beautiful memory box that allows for a picture on one side and either a paw print or something else on the other. I put Ollie's puppy collar and tags in that side.

Just to hold and touch that box make me feel better on some days...

God speed, sweet girl.
