February 13, 2007 - SOPHIE - Rest In Peace Beautiful Girl!!!

February 13, 2007 at 8:42 AM we set Sophie free from her pain.

It was the second hardest thing I have ever had to do and I am SO filled with mixed emotions over this.

I wish I had a better, more current photo of my BEAUTIFUL GIRL but this will have to do for now.

I am so very sorry for the loss of your Sophie. She was a beautiful girl. There has been so many of our fur kids go to the bridge lately. No matter how long they are with us it is never long enough. The hardest part is letting them go - but to see them in pain is too much to handle. Run free of pain Sophie and play with all of our fur kids, that have gone to the bridge before you, until your mom can meet you again. You are in my prayers.

I am so sorry to read this. I had no idea that Sophie had been ill.
She was a wonderful companion, and I know you will miss her more then we will ever know. Her spirit will remain with you always, and I hope that will offer you some comfort. This is such a difficult time.

Not long after Lucy died Sophie began limping alot on her hind legs.

After many vet visits and a few x-rays we found out that Sophie had arthritis in her spine near her pelvis. Rimidyl and her prednisone (she was taking for her addisons) seemed to keep her limping in check for a while. She would still have days where she didn't want to come out of her crate in the morning and would stay there all day. Then it got to the point where she walked drunk and had a hard time keeping her back side up.

Over the past 3 weeks she had gotten to the point where nothing was getting her back up. She couldn't walk with her hind legs at all. I have a wonderful vet who did all he could, even tried a new medication to try to shrink the arthritis in her spine, which was causing pressure on her nerves, which was causing paralysis in her legs.

Her hind legs were a mess and her front paws were beginning to get really torn up because all she could keep herself up with was the front but, she would get tired and flop down on her front paws...most of the time while they were under her which caused scuffs on her paws.

She hated not being able to come to us. She hated not being able to run and play with Ian. But as much as she was miserable...she didn't want to die. So on Monday we brought Sophie home from the vet, where she had been since the Thursday before, and loved on her, spoiled her, took some photos with her and told her how the vet had found a new medicine and in the morning we were going to try it and when she woke up she would be all better and be able to walk again.

I loved Sophie very much...too much to see her like she was.

It was the hardest thing I have ever had to do.
