Dozer left this world fighting

Dozer is at the bridge now but he fought it all the way. The vet ended up being a half hour late, he gave Dozer a sadative(sp?) 5x's the normal dose for a dog his size. The sedative should have took affect with in 15 minutes. 30 to 45 minutes later it took me and my son-in-law to hold Dozer down while the vet and his wife fought to hold his leg. It was allful! I choose to do it at home in hopes it would not be very stressful on Dozer but it was very stressful just the same. It was so hard to stay strong seeing him fight so hard for his life but I still know I did the right thing but it was so very hard!
Dozer is at peace now and will never be afraid again.
The vet only charged me $20.

Re: Dozer left this world fighting

If it's any consolation we've had several rescues that this happened with. 98% of the time euthanasia is calm and peaceful and the dog just lays down but then there are those dogs that for whatever reason don't go down well

It has always been awful when we've had that happen with rescues that change after they've been in foster care awhile or who fail a second eval after being pulled, I certainly feel for you

I am sorry the experience was difficult - but the most important thing is he is at peace now.

Re: Dozer left this world fighting

Miss Mary, You are truly courageous. You have been an inspiration to me. I remember when you first came to this forum, and you kept coming back. There are many people who come here for advice, but few who actually change there ways and take it. Most threads are bombarded with excuses of why people cant do things, not how they are trying to accomplish them. So thank you for that.

I am sorry about Dozer. You can rest assured now that you have done the right thing now though. He is truly at peace and forever free of all his demons. You have sacrificed your feelings for Dozer and he appreciates that, whether he knew better or not.

It must have been so hard, even knowing you were right to do it. I have a lump in my throat just now, even so.

Miss Mary, I am sorry to hear that you had to take Dozer to be rid of his demons. Living with those demons, however, is no way to live at all. I applaud your courage to end his suffering, and that you were there with him during it. I am sorry that you had to deal with something so hard.
May God grant peace to you, and may Dozer run free at the Bridge.

Re: Dozer left this world fighting

I've seen this happen on a few occasions as well..

Funny thing is, it only seems to happen in dogs that are somewhat mentally unbalanced.

Poor boy is at peace now, you did the right thing.

Godspeed Dozer.

Re: Dozer left this world fighting

Miss Mary, I'm so sorry the euthanasia was so rough...it really is very peaceful most of the time.

On the other hand, it makes sense to me that an unstable dog, unable to trust, would fight being overcome with sleepiness from the effects of a sedative - because an unstable dog does not know trust and a dog that does not know trust cannot relax....ever. To them, being always alert means being safe and it's dangerous to "let down".

This says to me even more that you have done the absolute right thing, 100%. I'm sorry for you and for Dozer that it was tough.

Godspeed, Dozer.....you are safe now.

Re: Dozer left this world fighting

I'm sorry this was rough, but you did the right thing, you were brave enough to do what had to be done.

It might help a bit to remember that Dozer wasn't really "fighting for his life", he was fighting being held down and sedated. He didn't know he was being put to sleep, he knew that he was being restrained and it was THAT that he was reacting to. Don't make this more difficult for yourself by ascribing a level of understanding to him that he didn't have. It's hard enough that you had to do this, and had to fight with him during it. I agree with moondog 100%, if anything, this makes it MORE certain that you did the right thing.

RIP Dozer, and Miss Mary, you are to be commended on your strength in doing the right thing. Spidey and moondog are right, Dozer never knew how to relax, you gave him the greatest gift of all, to be free of his demons.
