Today is the day...

Baker has an appointment at 9am. My mother in law STILL can't decide if she is doing the right thing by letting him go. He fell down the stairs last night when she tried to take him out for potty.

I explained that he is not the same dog he was 3 months ago "He doesn't want to chase the flashlight beam, he doesn't want to eat, he barely lifts his head when you come home - all of those things were his favorite things to do, especially be with you."

I called work - will go in late - even though it is down the street (less than 100 yards) she can't drive there herself.

I have to shower before I scare someone looking like I stuck a finger in a light socket...so I gently told her she needs to sit with him and tell him how much she loves him and how much he will be missed but that whatever illness he has isn't getting better, and that Thelda is waiting for him, and when he see's Thelda he will be able to run and jump and play again...and that we'll see him when we get to the bridge.

So, today is the day...I hate to say finally...but...

Godpseed old man...fly on the wings of angels...tell Thelda we miss her, we will miss you too, and please say hello to everyone else up there...

He is gone. Dr Goodson was very compassionate, having owned rotties himself. He asked us about what had happened and explained gently that sometimes all the care we give can't save them.

It was quick - the injection was painless, he took a deep breath and was gone. I think my mother in law will be able to deal with him being gone because she was there to let him go...

I thank you all for your kind words...Baker is at peace..whole and running. his ashes will be back with us next week and he and Thelda will be laid to rest together in the back yard, under the red maple tree where they both liked to lay in the shade.

My sympathies to you and your family, Anne. I'm sure this is quite a relief for you and you can be at peace now, too. When I read your post this morning I told Perle to watch for him, as he was coming soon. I'm sure they and all the others are having a grand old time today!!

Ahhhh, Sweet Baker......Anne, I'm sorry for you and your families loss but am so thrilled that Baker is now free. Give your MIL a hug from me - I'm sure she's really hurting right now. Thank you for being by her side to share in her grief as we all know how hard it is to let go of our best friends. I feel such relief for you, Anne, and know how hard you've been rooting for Baker to go on to his final home. I hope your MIL will soon find the peace we know her beloved friend would want her to feel. Thank you for being there. Godspeed Sweet Baker!

Ohhh Anne...I just read this. My heart goes out to you and your family. The decision was finally made by your MIL with help and compassionate words on your part.

I am saddened for you and your family....but relieved. I hope there will soon be restored peace at your home now that this painful episode is over. Hopefully MIL will not get another dog (based on what you've said).

Take Care,

Karen

Anne, I am so sorry for your loss, but at the same time relieved that this poor boy was allowed to be set free. Hugs to you and yours on this sad day. Baker is himself again up in heaven....He lived a good life.

I am so sorry for your loss - Baker is now pain free and had many friends waiting at the bridge for him - I'm sure his sister was the first to greet and welcome him home.

Goodspeed Baker and fly with the angels big guy.

Thank you for being there for him & advocating on his behalf.
