Phoebe

This past weekend we went to our cabin, taking all three dogs along. On Sunday evening my mom, Brian and I took Spike for a walk. The road leading to our cabin is a one lane dirt road, so whenever a vehicle approached I moved to the grass on the side and put Spike in a sit-stay until it passed. On this walk I noticed a full size SUV approaching with a Golden Retriever jumping and trotting along side of the driver. My first thought was irritation that they were risking the dog being injured, and second that the dog was loose and would be approaching us. As they came closer the dog went to the passenger's side and was just even with the front of the vehicle when it saw Spike. She became very alert and started to bark at Spike, and ran toward us in front of the SUV. Both wheels on the passenger's side passed over her belly. She leaped up and ran faster than I've ever seen. About 75 yards away she stopped and sat looking back at the vehicle, then laid down. Needless to say, she didn't survive.

I'm angry at the people for letting the dog run like that, and very sad for Phoebe having to go to the Bridge under these circumstances. I can't get the picture out of my mind of the front wheel passing over her and the sound of her initial cry. Our son saw it too. Godspeed Phoebe.....you can run and play to your heart's content.....

Sue- How dreadful!!!! How is your son handling this? Phoebe I hope the bridge is as beautiful a place as it is in my heart and mind, you certainly deserve it. Now there is another Golden Angel to watch over all our four legged babies.

What a horrible tragedy! Why on earth do people assume they can do things like that and nothing will ever go wrong? When we lived in Florida I took my Freddy Ridgeback for walks every night. There was a fairly well traveled street that we often walked on at night. This particular evening it was winter and there were hardly any cars coming along because the tourists were not in town for events. As Freddy and I walked, an elderly lady opened her front door across the street from us....I am sure she didn't expect another dog across the street. Her GSD came flying out the door, saw Freddy and ran into the street....just as a towtruck came along. I saw that poor GSDrolling under the truck ten ft. away from me. The driver stopped....the GSD ran off to the backyard of his home. It turned out that the tow truck driver had previously rented from the lady so they knew one another and he was able to calm her. I believe the dog survived because the wheels never went over him...I will never forget it and I can imagine the picture of Phoebe that you have engraved in your mind forever. It is just awful. Yesterday I was having a garage sale at a friend's home and she lives on a fairly busy street. Here comes a Pointer running down the street in front of cars...I whistled and he came running to me...got hold of his collar...no ID...took him to the Humane Society. Today I will bring Elijah to the neighborhood and ask around if anyone is missing their dog. None of this stuff should happen...people need to think...breaks my heart :(

How horrible! I know that picture would stay with me forever. It's hard enough to lose a beloved pet, but when you have to witness such a tragedy, it's even worse. I'm so very sorry.

Just wanted to let you know that the Pointer I mentioned in my post is now back at home. I just called the Humane Society and they said the owner picked up his dog yesterday. It seems he is an active working dog (hunting) and they keep him in an outdoor kennel...somehow he managed to escape. This was a very happy, affectionate, well cared for dog....I am happy to report a happy ending on this one.
