my puppy smells bad

Two weeks ago my 6 1/2 month onld puppy went into heat. I have been reading the other post in order to gain more information about what to do and what I can expect. The posts have been really helpful. I am having a problem that I can't find in a post.

Do dogs smell when they are in heat? The first week she was in heat there was only drops of blood on the floor, but no smell. The second week I noticed a weird smell coming from her vagina. The smell has gotten so bad that you can smell her from across the room.

I am calling the vet tomorrow, but I would like to know if anyone has an idea of what this smell may be?

Re: my puppy smells bad

they can have a smell to them, but if it is really bad and you are concerned, have your vet see her to make sure no infection is going on.
try giving her a good bath first to see if that helps. sometimes if they bled heavy they can have a strong smell if they do not groom themselves much. i mostly have noticed on the english bulldogs, especially as they get close to the ready to be bred dates.(they have a hard time grooming themselves!)

Re: my puppy smells bad

Mind you I got this from another thread started by TrinaJ " My baby's growing up"... I just thought the info may be of some help... I'm not a breeder, and I have no knowledge of a female in heat... but just thought it might help...

It knocks down "body odor" and seems to work well on bitch odor as well! When Abby is in season and on her chlorophyll, my 2 intact males pretty much are non-reactive to her presence (they are not together but they know where she is and she still uses the yard). If they do show some interest, I just up the dosage.

Her poop is very dark green when she is in season! VBG!

Friends who have used it also have said that if the males are reactive, they just use a larger dose.

Yes bitches do smell while they are in heat, the scent gets stronger closer to the time the are ready to be bred as that is what attracts the male.

Re: my puppy smells bad

I just got back from the vet and everything is fine :) My vet did give me two weeks worth of Keflex, just incase she is developing a UTI.

Thank you for the replies
