Re: wont stand down to bigger dogs

If you do nothing then nothing will change. The only difference will be that your dog will get more aggressive as he gets older. He is exhibiting this behaviour because he hasn't been taught that it's unacceptable. At the moment the puppy is calling the shots.

If I were the owner of the 5 month old bulldog puppy I would be furious that you had no control over your pup and allowed it to attack my puppy. Most of us do our best to protect our puppies from bad experiences. I hope the bulldog doesn't think it now needs to protect itself from all other dogs.

You need to take this dog to obedience training so that you learn how to train him and he learns to respect and trust your leadership. If I were you I would seek out a good private trainer who is very experienced with the breed.

What do you do while all this action is happening between your puppy and other dogs?

Until you have the situation under control please don't take this pup off leash anywhere it's far too dangerous not only for your dog but for any other dog he may come across.
If things are allowed to continue as they presently are there is a good chance you will lose your dog. Either it will be killed by another dog or animal control will seize the dog for being a dangerous dog.

I wish you the best with your puppy. You need to take some action now, before the behaviour becomes totally out of control.

No, your puppy's behavior won't change unless you smarten up.

Stop letting your puppy fight other dogs. Stop taking your puppy to dog parks. Stop letting your puppy off leash.

Do sign yourself and your puppy up for obed classes.

Re: wont stand down to bigger dogs

When Brinks was a little younger, anytime we came across other dogs I would give him the chance to be polite. If he wasn't (pawing, jumping, nipping) I would say "alright lets go" and take him out of the situation. He was always onleash and I wanted him to understand that this behaviour was not acceptable. This is all I had to do. He quickly picked up on the fact that if he didn't behave in a polite way, he wasn't going to get to stay and socialize.
I did this for two reasons. One was, I know some adult dogs are not tolerant of a puppy's antics and I didn't want him getting hurt for his foolish behaviour. The second reason is that I wanted him to understand from a very young age, that being polite is the only way he was going to be able to "play" or "greet" another dog.
He will now walk up to other dogs calmly, sniffing with his butt wiggling. He gives a polite sniff of the face, down the body to the back end (generally the other dog is doing the same). He will then look at me and sit at my feet.

Post Re: wont stand down to bigger dogs

You may want to read this thread that was started a few weeks ago.
http://www.rottweiler.net/forums/pup...-15-weeks.html

It's not a good idea to be bringing puppy to the park to be playing with unknown dogs. A nasty dog may not like being bullied by your pup....and attack him...making him dog aggressive for life.

Get signed up for Puppy Kindergarten and keep on taking classes for the next couple of years...this is where you and he will learn.

How early was he removed from the litter? He sounds like a puppy that didn't get his early lessons in speaking "dog".

Don't be so sure it's the other dogs that start it. A puppy that isn't respectful of older dogs is asking for a correction by the other dog. If the other puppies are aggressive themselves, then what are you doing there? A dog park is a terrible place for him - he's going to grow up fighting every dog that looks at him "wrong" if you keep it up.

Get him into CLASS and out of the dog park.

Re: wont stand down to bigger dogs

Personally, if your pup is the nicest dog at that park, the park sounds dangerous and should be avoided.

I despise dog parks because unless you have complete control over your own dog and completely trust them NOT to react (which is truly unfair to a well-trained dog to ask them to endure the wrath of poorly trained/mannered dogs), they are a place where most people just let their out of control dogs who can't be walked on a leash for lack of training, run wild and free and most people don't know their dogs (or canine behavior for that matter) well enough to use dog parks the way they were intended in the first place.

My suggestion is echoing that of the others - take your dog to training and avoid places where he is just going to let those bad habits grow.

Re: wont stand down to bigger dogs

Moe, the advice given still stands. Get your pup into obedience training so that you learn about acceptable dog behaviour or you will have a huge problem on your hands. Whether your pup is the one doing the bullying or the one being bullied...either way it's because you are not doing your job. Protect your pup, train him, he deserves no less.

Do not allow your pup to run up and lick people. Some people will strongly object and you can be sure as he gets bigger people will be fearful when he runs up to them. They'll think he's running up to them for other reasons.

Please take note of the advice given. You owe it to your puppy. You can be certain there is trouble ahead if you take no action.

Dog parks sound awful across the pond. Our local off leash park is huge and in the 7+ years I've been going there I've never seen an altercation between dogs. Often there are no other dogs there or they're in a far flung section of the park and we don't meet eachother. There are walking tracks through natural bushland as well as two very large grassed ovals.

It's not a dog park as such, it is an open unfenced public park with a childrens playground, tennis courts and a bike track. Being so large there's room for everyone. People are polite and we leash our dogs if a new dog appears so they can meet in controlled circumstances. If all is well we let them play off leash.

There are rules that only well behaved dogs under control are allowed off leash. The Rangers, who are our equivalent of Animal Control, patrol the park several times a day and anyone doing the wrong thing will get a ticket and told not to come back to the park...or else!!

The Rangers often bring their own dogs to the park for a play with other dogs.
My Sophie used to have a play date twice a week there with the Ranger's GSD.

Re: wont stand down to bigger dogs

Obedience training is for YOU to learn how to teach your dog behaviors you want, and to teach you how to extinguish the behaviors you do not want. It would likely do you well to research and read some books on dog behavior and body language.

I concur with the others; it does sound as though your boy may have missed out on some important imprinting. His lashing out when pinned is not good - he's either scared and fighting back, or he's very dominant with the other dogs and when pinned it pisses him off. Either way, YOU are the boss and need to take control of the situation.

Dog parks are not the safest place in the world to take a pup to. Too much likelihood of a very BAD imprint occuring. Please read the link provided in the post above, you might think twice about taking your boy there. If the other dogs are pinning him because he's a rude little tyke, you are running the risk of him being attacked badly when he doesn't back down to these dogs.
