Unmotivated Pup

Hi all. We have two 15 week old Rotties (brothers) at home. The Boys are totally different in every way. Taz is the smaller of the two with ALL the energy and curiosity you would expect in a puppy. Cain has about 10 lbs over his brother. He would rather lay around and sleep. For instance, he was sleeping under a chair in the kitchen, when we went to move the chair, he did not get up. We tried to coax him up, but he still would not bulge. We then pushed his body from under the chair and he still did not move a muscle. Did not even lift his head. Just went back to sleep. He does have his puppy moments, but usually he just lets his brother search out the trouble and joins him afterwards.

The vet says both are healthy. The Boys have another appt in a couple weeks. Just wondering if anyone else has a lazy pup.

Re: Unmotivated Pup

Everyone is a unique individual. If the vet's given your puppies clean bills of health, clearly one of your puppies isn't energetic.

I regret you didn't find RDN before you brought your two puppies home.

Raising two puppies at the same time is not something many RDNs would think of doing. It's a challenge to successfully socialize and train one Rottie to help that dog become a good canine citizen. With two the work and effort is more than doubled.

And, same sex to boot.

Furthermore, it doesn't speak well for the quality of the breeding program being pursued by the breeder of your males that he or she sold you two puppies from the same litter.

There have been many discussions on the difficulty of raising two puppies simultaneously. You'll find these discussions by using the Search function at the top of the page.

Post Re: Unmotivated Pup

Honestly I would be worried about hip dysplasia. Lazy puppies are often puppies that don't move much because it hurts.

I would also be worried about having two same sex, same age males together later. How much time do they spend apart?

My first Rottie Bruno was a large, lazy pup...he was diagnosed with severe HD by the time he was 9 months of age.

Another thought would be heart problems. I would have him thoroughly checked out by the vet.

Re: Unmotivated Pup

I have a now 7 month old puppy that is also very laid back. To the point of being annoying. I have usually had dogs with much more drive and this guy is a flat out slug. He is obedient and as sweet as can be but really really lazy. He has been checked out by a vet who thinks he is the greatest Rottie he has seen. lol He prefers the lazy ones. I guess he will be a Therapy dog instead of an Agility or tracking dog. lol

Re: Unmotivated Pup

Dixie is laid back as well. Always has been.

A thryoid check reveiled a problem and she's medicated for that, but it didn't create energy dog. She's better but by nature, she's a couch potatoe.
