Lightbulb puppy training

hello to all. I have a new puppy, Jake. He is 11 weeks old and not allowed out for another week due to his vacs. What age is suitable for him to begin puppy training school? I try walking him around our garden on his lead but he is having none of it. How do I get him used to his lead?

Re: puppy training

My kennel club holds puppy K classes for puppies 8-16 weeks old. Are you looking for puppy classes now? If not, think about doing so.

How to get him used to the weight of a leash on his collar?

Attach a light line to his collar and let him drag it around when you're there to supervise him.

Re: puppy training

The puppyK class I went to wanted proof of vaccination before Max could participate in the classes. Maybe you should look for classes that require proof. That way you can be sure the puppies are as safe as possible.

You've got to bring proof of your puppy's vaccinations to the first class of the puppy K classes run by my kennel club.

Re: puppy training

Make sure your puppy is going to a school where all dogs who enter are vaccinated. If they require proof of shots for your dog; they require them for every dog.

**Cant remember exactly, but I think Nisha was 12 weeks her 1st day of "school". We started training before that though; she knew "sit", "down", and could walk on a leash before her 1st class. We used a "clicker" to train her.

Re: puppy training

We started Mango in puppy kindergarten at 9 weeks. The venue is very strict about the proof of vaccinations, and the classes were mostly about socializing the pups to new experiences (new sounds, new people, new surfaces to walk on, supervised play, etc).

Read all the threads on "socializing puppies". It is important to get your pup out into the world as young as possible. There are plenty of safe ways and places to go, just read up on socialization.

Re: puppy training

Nelsonm64 clicker training was the best thing I ever did with my dog! It made our training sessions so fun and productive. Basically a clicker "marks" a behavior the SECOND it is preformed. ex: sit, you "click" as soon as your dogs but hits the ground. It is a faster and more accurate way to "mark" the correct behavior than a verbal cue.

You have to "load" the clicker so your dog understands click = good. Basically you click, then treat until your dog "gets" it. Once she knows click = treat...the rest is history!

Using a clicker I taught Nisha all sorts of things, spin, bow, close cabinets (one I regret ), shake, pick up things, touch, "show your best side" (an all time fav ). Many would not be as easy without the clicker. Example: for "show your best side" we clicked every time she turned her head; eventually she figured out what we wanted. Using a verbal cue can be more confusing; dogs need reassurance the second they do something right; if your cues are off, the learning becomes more difficult. Using a verbal cue teaching "sit" for example you may say "good girl" when she is starting to stand back up; then she thinks the standing up part is correct instead of the actual "sit".

Sorry if this is confusing ! here is a link that may help http://www.rottweiler.net/forums/tra...-training.html

My trainers rottie knows "do you like cats?" then she licks her lips...it is so cute, thats next on our list .

oh wow. you have one smart dog! im definately going to give the "clicker" a try now ;) i would love to see Max do tricks like that in the future. back when Baron was a pup i could never really train him because Rosco the Rottie/Shepard cross i had would kick the crap out out of him, but that was 13 years ago, and i know alot more now than i did then, and i would really like Max to live up to his potential! he is already exibiting signs of being quite smart. thanks for explaining the Clicker method :)

I suggest using the lead in house for short periods at a time to get him used to the idea and not having to "do his business" on the lead while getting used to being "restricted".

I am proud to say that I got my baby at 4 mths and at 5 mths I trained her sit, down, roll over, "Bang"-play dead, sit pretty, "friend - paw", other paw, high five, double high five... it just blows the docs mind at the vet clinic I work at. ESPECIALLY CONSIDERING I adopted her from the pound where she was found as a "stray". To this point I haven't used a clicker however I must admit, she's VERY food motivated, therefore we have trick treats for her and now she not only does tricks for treats. I feared she would "train me" with the treats and tricks, but so far so good.

The only thing I can't get her to do is to STOP MOUTHING - ARGHHHHHHHHHHHH VERY ANNOYING considering I knowhow intelligent she is. Sry, just had to brag a little... it's just unbelievable to me because somebody obviously bought her and "threw her away" but they OBVIOUSLY put time in with her to train her because she was relatively good as soon as we brought her home (knew sit, walked on leash decently).
