| I've noticed that my 11 week pup is not liking his dry food, it could be the med that he is on which is Albon tablets. I did mixed yogurt with his dry food and that only lasted 3 days. Now I'm trying canned food which he seems to like better. Is dry food better than canned food, I don't know which one to stick with? Once he's done with the medication I'm gonna try to switch him back to dry food and see if he'll eat it, if not then I'll go back to canned food. What canned food will be the better one? I am looking for something with no by products. |

| Re: Dry food vs. Can food I would keep the puppy on dry food and supplement the dry with cottage cheese, yogurt or pumpkin to enhance the flavor. Wet food, while it smells yummy to dogs, is mostly water and not efficiently used by the animal, plus full time feeding of wet is not cost effective either. There are countless threads in the nutrition and grooming section on food and feeding. Try a search and see if there is anything there that will help with your finicky pup. Good luck ! Marley

| Re: Dry food vs. Can food I did try the yogurt but what he will do is lick the yogurt from the dry food and won't eat it and it didn't last long. I've noticed that when I mix it with can food he will eat the whole thing with the dry food. |

| Re: Dry food vs. Can food First, what kibble are you feeding your pup? I have also had luck using a bit of beef or chicken stock (low sodium) added to the kibble.

| Re: Dry food vs. Can food If you're concerned that your pup will only lick out the broth, let it sit till it gets mushy and then serve it. |

| Re: Dry food vs. Can food I am feeding him Lifes Abundace. Also, I tried wetting the kibble and he didn't eat it. I do however have added chicken and he will gobble it all up. I don't want to get into the habit of feeding him human food. I will try the chicken broth and see how it will do. |

| Re: Dry food vs. Can food There is nothing whatsoever wrong with high quality canned food, it's got more meat, less/no grain and can have no preservatives. But it's expensive to feed a large dog on canned only. If price is not a problem, by all means feed high-quality canned (or mix canned with dry), it's very healthy.

| Re: Dry food vs. Can food Wet food is 'commonly' made up of 80% water and your dogs poops will be sloppier and smellier than if just feeding a high quality dry kibble (I am talking cheap supermarket canned food, not the food Amanda is speaking from in the above post, which is DEFINATELY NOT CHEAP and of a good standard). You can let the kibble soak in chicken broth, you will see the kibble expand (as it does in their tummy's) the kibble will have soaked in the flavour of the chicken broth to make it a little more appealing. Perservere with the yoghurt, its good for your dog. My Jett licked the yoghurt off the kibble to start with, now she can eat it alone without any problem at all. Rather than feed canned wet food why not feed raw meat......try mixing some raw meat with the yoghurt and kibble....get seome ground up beaf or lamb or kangaroo (or whatever kind of meats you guys have there) and stir it all together. Your dog will soon get used to the kibble. You can also try some cottage cheese with the kibble as well (low salt), sardines, vegetables (Jett LOVES her vegies), i just add in some of the nights leftovers for her as she eats after we do and pretty much gets anything that is left over, apart from the cooked bones). Chicken necks and chicken carcus (whole or ground) are also a favourite of the dogs, they go NUTS for them!!!) Just think of the puppy as a baby who you are feeding solids to for the first time only you dont end up wearing it! The puppy, like a baby, will develop a taste for what you are feeding it. A dog will eat anything if its hungry (Jett used to eat horse poop ). Take the food away and toss it after 10 minutes, a puppy should have gobbled it up and licked the bowl clean by that time. Good luck it wont take long to have him licking that bowl clean of all the kibble. Trina
