If your any indication of how the members of this board act I can only assume that you love the breed a long as it's a got 20 best in shows in it's background. I.E a snob

The reason people jump on byb is that they are out for $$$period. 99.9% don't have the best interest of the breed in mind. I am a breeder and do 1 litter per year. my dogs have health clearances, show/working titles etc... There is a huge difference between me and the person you bought your pup from. I'm not bagging on you, however I wouldn't buy a pup from anyone without knowing the lines, health clearances on both parents etc....
your worried about fear biting and by the sounds of it, you probably will have a problem on your hands in the future unless you do some proper training and fast

and some may be snobby but we spend countless hours working with our dogs to make sure they have the right stuff to be bred, that is the way of protecting the rottie. we've earned the right to give our opinion when you ask for it. if you don't like what is being written then don't ask, and later you'll have issues

Re: Question about 5 month old cowering when approached

*sighs*

DomAndCats - You most definitely ARE talking to a group of knowledgeable people. I owned a Rottie for 10 years and have my second one coming sometime in September and I STILL have learned a lot of very useful information here. Things I never had an issue with but others had. Questions I had that were answered by someone elses troubles, etc. However, some can get very snide and rude in there posts. I really don't have an answer to that but I think a lot of it is due to the fact they love their dogs AND this breed. With BSL looming ever so close everywhere and the amount of the dogs they love in rescue, they tend to get snippy. Some places are very close to loosing the right to own their breed of choice simply because of lack of education, BYB and puppy mills.

About all I can offer is to hang in there. Moondog gave you some great advice. Don't be afraid to ask questions as SOMEONE will answer them civilly. Take the advice you get and apply it and it will work! Ignore the snide comments. Just move right on by them and get to the advice you need :)

Hope this helps some!

Re: Question about 5 month old cowering when approached

Ok after some work shes perfectly fine with me and I had read other posts what stumped me was the fact that she only cowered with me everytime she did it sporadically with my wife (usually when I was around my wife) and not at all with my children. Now she's stopped cowering with me. Thanks moondog your advice worked great. And Angel unfortunately I live in small town America literally look up Lewistown PA you'll see what I mean. I don't have alot of rot breeders in my area I have one and they didn't have any pups available they are the ones who put me in touch with the breeder I got my pup from. So if they recommend one to me I can only assume they trust her. If she made a mistake by incorrectly socializing the pups like she did than I will have to deal with that Katy has made leaps and bounds over the last few days. And it was her first time breeding, but that isn't necassarily a knock against her all breeders had to start out as BYB correct. And I received all papers for her plus a record of her vet history and I talked to the vet who not only took care of the pups, but the sire and bitch as well and there were no medical worries.

Lewistown sounds familiar to me since most of my family's still in the Carlisle area. I looked the town up, it's not that far (about 60 miles) from Harrisburg.

The bigger issue to understand is that if you stick on this board long enough, you'll hear stories of people who can't find a good breeder in their area or even their state. Some members will take a flight to pick up their new puppy. Some will make a long drive.

Please stick around on this board. I've been on it for 2 years now and found it invaluable. I now tell people I know too much about what a good breeder looks like vs. a bad one. For example, not all breeders start out as BYB.

Some either have a mentor or know from this site what a good breeder needs to do before they even think about breeding. Some first time breeders have spent months researching which other person's dog they want to use on their male or female since most don't breed their personal male to their personal female.

There are multiple members on here who have found out their puppy's papers pretty much aren't worth the paper they're printed on. Some also have puppies with hip dysplasia or SAS because their "breeder" didn't feel it was necessary to get the health clearances from OFA, a cardiologist, etc.

That's not to say that dogs with good hips or hearts don't produce a puppy or litter with these issues, but the odds are a lot less when the clearances have been done ahead of time. Anyone can take their dog to their vet and ask if they could breed him or her, but there's a big difference between "could" and "should."
