Pretending to pee for praise? or bladder issue?

Hey everybody, time for some more advice. Dozer is almost 14 weeks old. He's GREAT. We've been potty training him, and he hasn't had an accident inside the house since his first week home.

I take him out on a leash, and tell him to go potty, he usually sniffs for a minute then pees. After he pees I immediatly start praising and telling him good boy (which he seems to like!) But I've noticed in the last week he'll pee and get his praise, then we stay on the grass for a minute, and kinda walk around and then he'll squat and look like he's gonna pee again (he'll do this a couple times in one outing). Usually nothing comes out, but I did notice once or twice a couple drops of pee.

Is he doing this behavior for more praise? Or could he have a bladder issue? Any help would be appreciated!!!

Take your pup to the vet, only the vet can diagnose a bladder problem.

Re: Pretending to pee for praise? or bladder issue?

Will do Zorro, I'm taking him to the Vet this week for his 3rd round of shots, and we'll have him check out Dozer to make sure there isn't any Bladder issue.

I was just wondering if his behavior was a common one, or something to be concerned about.

But, we will be taking him in to make sure he's ok, and if it's not a bladder issue then I guess I'm doing a good job praising him, cause he even fakes a pee for praise. :)

Re: Pretending to pee for praise? or bladder issue?

Sounds like our Max. Our trainer said he was a "double peer", and if I can remember correctly, it didn't start right away. He didn't empty his bladder the whole way with the first pee, but the second time he peed, even if it was just a small stream or a few drops he's finished. Does he want let out to pee, take him in and in a few minutes want back out to pee? Our trainer said that's normal with some dogs.

Yes it is a good idea to go to the vet to make sure.
However our female was doing that for a while. She is now 4 months old and is no longer doing that. It was when she was betweem 12-14 wks.
Good luck!

Re: Pretending to pee for praise? or bladder issue?

Thanks for your reply Max'sMom. He doesn't seem to want out again to pee. He pees then I walk him in the yard for a couple minutes, then he squats to pee again. Maybe he is just a double peer :)

So we'll see if it's not a bladder issue, maybe he just likes to take his time peeing, and get double the praise :)

my missy precious is 8 1/2 w/o and does the same thing. the majority of the pee gets out the first time, and if she heads back for the door on her own, i know she is done..but if she continues to sniff, i let her go take her second little pee, and get her second treat.

now, my dachshund on the other hand is well beyond potty trained at 13 months, BUT being the littlle foodhound he is (he has always been on a doggie diet to make sure his weight stays within standard because he is so big and muscular) he will squat down and stare at you while 100% absolutely pretending to pee, just to get the treat. Hopefully it isn't a trick he teaches miss precious. i still reward him for it, though....even though he didn't pee, because i feel like in doing that, it reinforces his complete concept of what potty training is.
