| Need a little advice with running / nipping... Greetings everyone, I am relatively new here, but have been doing quite a bit of reading on these forums lately... I have a 4 month old Rottie male named "Elvis". He is a good boy and I have had fun learning about this breed and learning things with him. This is only my second dog, my buddy "Howie" was a German Shephard & Rott mix and he recently passed away a couple of months back. Elvis has been easy to housetrain, and learned to sit consistently by his third night in our house. He has been relatively easy to train, although getting his attention can sometime be a little tough for me. I had a little aggresion issue if he was chewing something new, but using the trade method seems to be working well for the most part... He does however, sometimes charge and leap while nipping at me. It is sometimes hard to get him to stop other than to keep telling him NO, sit or at times knock him down while he leaps and bites. I am not pushing him hard, but if he is in the air and I put hy hands out he sometimes will fall and I worry about him getting hurt, or worse than that hurting my daughter while doing it as well. He will also often chase my daughter and my wife while biting at their pants and often putting holes in their clothes. I know this is probably an easy fix, and he is starting some classes within the next week or so. I was hoping someone could help out with some advice in the meantime... ~Thanks |

| Re: Need a little advice with running / nipping... Our Genghis was doing the same thing. He is 17 weeks old now. We use an emty peanut can with some rocks in it. As soon as he acts up, We shake the can at him to get his attention. Then put him into a "sit". I usually then snap his leash on him and take him outside because when he acts up like this most of the time he has to "go potty". But if I know he doesn't have to go I will follow the "sit" command by "kennel up" and he will run to his kennel. I then treat him with praise and a dried liver which he only gets for going into his kennel. He loves those liver treats so he flies into that kennel. After a quick time out, mostly for me to find a toy to shove in his mouth, he gets to come out with us better prepared to deal with some redirection onto a toy. |
