Small for a 2 1/2 month old?

My puppy is 2 1/2 months old and weighs about 12 lbs. All of the growth charts I found said that at 3 months he should weigh around 30+ lbs. Is it normal for him to be so small? I know growth is unpredictable but he seems to be way off the norm if he needs to double in size within 2 weeks to be on track. However, he has been sleeping alot lately so I'm hoping a growth spurt might be on the way?

We feed him Eukanuba large breed puppy food, which was recommended by the vet, and he eats between 2 and 3 cups a day over 3 eating sessions. He was checked for worms and he has had all the immunizations he is supposed to have at this point, and the vet said he is healthy. I checked all over the web and I couldn't really find anything close enough to put me at ease.

Please let me know what you guys think. Thanks!

P.S. - If anyone has had a puppy that grew on this same schedule, could you tell me how your puppy's growth continued through puppyhood?

Thanks!

Re: Small for a 2 1/2 month old?

I actually just posted that Roxie at 6 months is only 50 lbs, and was asking the same kind of question using the same kind of food...I was told to do a search in the nutrition section for food...I found that canidae ALS was talked about a lot.

Roxie was 20 lbs at 3 months

At 10 weeks old your male puppy is a bit on the light side.
What size were the parent's? Did you get him from a COE breeder? What did your breeder say?

Eukanuba is not a great choice of food, and most vets really know little about nutrition...they push the brand that they sell, or what they know from watching t.v. commercials.

Do some reading, and you will find the most popular foods are foods that use human grade meats, few grains and no fillers or by-products.
Innova, Canidae, California Natural, Wellness, etc. are all good foods.

Re: Small for a 2 1/2 month old?

At two months old I think Zoey was 12-13 pounds or so (it has been a while). Now at almost 2 years old, she is 83 pounds and filled out perfectly! He will grow at his own pace, just let him fill out naturally and everything should be great.

I really wouldn't worry too much about the size of your guy. Keeping lean as they grow is much easier on the joints. Not sure which growth chart you've looked at but the one that I saw has something a little weird with the math between 6 weeks and 3 months, it said that my girl should put on 20lbs in that 6-7 weeks, and a whopping 26.5lbs for boys!!!! Seems like too much to me.

I'm no expert but I really think the best way to judge is just by looking and feeling your pup. A nice waist and ribs that can be felt easily.
