Roxie is 6 months old

My female rottie is 6 months old last monday and I went and weighed her and she weighed 51 lbs and was 20 inches at her withers. I feed her 2 times a day at 2 cups a feeding with a spoonful of plain yogurt.

My questions are

- She still sleeps a lot most of the night when I get home from work, usually 4 or 5 pm, she is up maybe an hour or two during this time and then she sleeps all night long. Is this normal?

- I know you want your rottie to grow slow but according to charts on the internet the average for a girl is 66 lbs and 22 inches at withers. Am I not feeding her enough?

Thanks for the help
Brad

Re: Roxie is 6 months old

HI Brad! You aren't too far from me...The amount of food you feed depends on what kind of food you are feeding and the calorie content...Then you gage on how she looks, not what's on the bag. She sounds like she is fine, they say the average growth is about 10 pounds per month, so if she is 6 months and 51 pds, she's fine. Again, how does she look? When you are gone, is she crated? what type of activities are you doing with her? Is she in classes? If she is crated all day, then you come home and she still sleeps it could be a couple things, she could just be a bit of a couch potatoe, some are, but there is a chance there is something going on medically. If you engage her in play is she happy to do it? Have you had a vet check her out? Maybe do a blood panel?

Re: Roxie is 6 months old

We have gone through the puppy class and she is in a beginner obedience class. She participates but when we just stand there she usually lays down and mellos out...the trainers say she has great temperment so I guess she is ok. We go for walks in the morning and in the afternoon usually about a mile or two. She will play soccer with me on the weekends well take the ball and chase it...haha

The vet has checked her out and says she is in perfect health...I guess I just see puppies when I am in class that are really hyper and she just chills...not that I want a hyper one either :-)

When I am gone during the day she is crated or I have a dog run in the back I leave her in if it is going to be nice outside.

I feed her eukanuba large breed puppy.

I posted some pics of her

Brad

Re: Roxie is 6 months old

Brad,
If your puppy is crated all day and is not bouncing off the walls when you get home, I would be a little concerned. Although it DOES depend on the personality of your dog, it seems at 6 months she should want to do a little more than lounge around.

When was her last vet visit? Has she had a blood test done recently? What about a fecal test? I would express your concerns to the vet, and request these tests to be sure she is okay.

Eukanuba is not a recommended food. Please do a search in the nutrition forum. Getting proper nutrition may help increase her activity level.

As soon as this bag is gone, I will switch to Canadae ALS. I have always been told Eukanunba is one of the best foods but reading the nutrition forum I see it isn't.

Re: Roxie is 6 months old

Brad, sounds like you just have a puppy that you are keeping the energy burned off! that's a good thing...A lot of different places I took Jaycee, she would just lay down right in the middle of the floor and sprawl out if she was tired, usually in petsmart and sometimes in class...
