Trouble going back to sleep

Brewski has been having some trouble falling back to sleep after his early am potty. He usually wakes up around 5am to go potty, but our normal "wake-up time" isn't until 6:30-7am. I have been losing this extra hour or so of sleep every morning for the past week or so, and its starting to catch up with me! Anyway, my routine is to leash him in his crate, walk him directly outside to his potty spot, then right back in and into the crate. This morning he whined and barked for about 30 mins. Before falling back to sleep. He was just diagnosed with HD, and I'm wondering if he is in pain or just excited to start the day?!? Any ideas? If he is in pain, is there anything safe I can give him on his rough mornings to help him feel better?

Thanks guys!!
