marrow bones for pup

I have an eleven month old pup and was wondering if giving him marrow bones is okay. I am talking about the ones that do not shred. They still have some marrow in it- they are kept frozen till it is time to eat.

Absolutely you can give RAW marrow bones. It's the best chew bone out there! I give it forzen as well for about an hour, then take it up again and freeze it for the next time.

I start giving a marrow bone to a pup as soon as they get home.
The only thing to watch for is that the marrow is very rich, and until the pup/dog get's used to it, it may cause loose stools or an upset tummy.

You could try giving the frozen bone for 15 minutes or so, then trade the bone wby using a bit of chicken or cheese or some other goodie. Pop the bone back in to the freezer...and give again the next day.

You could also give a thawed out bone....but scoop some of the marrow out before giving the bone....this way you control the amount of marrow that the pup will get.

Isnt there some kind of risk associated with raw bones? What about splinters?

Raw is all good, when they're cooked is where you may get into trouble.

Cooked bones splinter. Raw marrow bones do not. I do not give my dogs cooked bones ever.

Where is the best place to get raw marrow bones? Would a supermarket carry them or would it have to be from a butcher?

Either or. I have gotten mine at the grocery store, in the freezer section, they are packaged in twos and I can get them as cheap as $1.80 or so for a pair. I look for the ones that have more meat on them.

I do sometimes also go to the butcher's to get some cut up for me.

i dont think i have ever seen raw marrow bones..i will have to look..what part of the freezer section would they be in...

I get mine at my local butcher. I get the big beef leg bones, then the butcher cuts them up into 3 or 4 sections for me.

They aren't found in the freezer section. You buy them raw, then you freeze them.

Beef marrow bones/bones for soup stock are found in the fresh meat department. They're often found near organ meats and suet.

If you don't see them, ask at the butcher's window.

Raw marrow bones found in a supermarket are usually labeled "soup bones". I only buy those if they are at LEAST 3" long to prevent any risk of choking. You can also buy them at a butcher shop (some shops don't charge at all for them), and there you would ask for "center cut femurs".

Some markets do store them in the freezer section - our Whole Foods Market here does.

I find mine in the freezer section with other soup bone type bones/meat. I do sometimes go to the butcher counter, but mostly I get it from the frozen section.

You can also try your local pet food supply stores (not PS or Pco). Alot of them carry them next to their prepared raw foods. You will pay more but they are usually smaller, cut up pieces if you don't feel like bothering your butcher.
