Ears on Puppy

I have been working with Roxie's ears and want to make sure they are looking like they are supposed to look. Any suggestions? She is 21 weeks old.

Thanks
Brad

Re: Ears on Puppy

Her ears look good to me!! You have to remember tho that she will still be teething at this age and the whole teething process will often result in "flying" ears for a duration. I usually massage them nightly and knock on wood haven't had to tape any of my personal dogs YET......I have had to tape two pups from two previous litters in the past and they have ended up with beautiful ear sets.

Your girl looks like her ear set is fine right now....but due to her teething I would suspect that they'll go out again

Continue doing whatever you're doing. She has a nice ear set.

What do you mean taped ears. I never heard anything about that or having towork woth my pups ears, even though they look just like that. What other ways have rotties are been known to look like when not taped are they pointy or something.LOL... Just curiou..s

Then again, my girls ears are much shorter than those. I don't understand the difference or what you mean by they will still fly back out?

Re: Ears on Puppy

Rotties can end up with ears that fly upward (think pictures of the "Flying Nun" from TV) and/or tend to fold down the middle and be held folded back rather than hanging down or "pendant" as the standard describes it... they call them "rose petal ears" and other terms. They are not correct to the standard. My girl has them. They are certainly very expressive, but not correct.

When a pup is teething is typically when you see the most ear set problems occurring....typically by 6-6.5 months most ear problems fall into line. My vet has always encouraged me to massage the cartilege in their ears while teething and it has always worked for my personal dogs for correcting some of the ear problems caused by teething.

I have taped (literally) ears down to the side of their head to promote a good ear set in pups however.

The only reason I commented to the OP that the ears may fly out again is that his pup is only 21 weeks (ie 5 months/1 week) she has a LOT of teething yet to do!!! After teething is over typically ear sets at least in my experience maintain fairly normally.

Re: Ears on Puppy

Oh yeah well my girls ears at 4 months seem to always look like they are going back. They are not flat to her head either, but they don't sit out to the sides either. I usually see them flipped down backwards or maybe she just does this herself. I'm not really positively sure I never really pay much attention to that. Is there something I can start doing now to ASSURE her ears will come out the RIGHT way, regardless of how they look now. Which I won't be sure about until I get home and check em out. WOW!!! I learn something new every day...

Wow, you did a great job at the taping! From the first pictures I would have never known her ears were beginning to fly. We've been watching our boys ears every day, but so far we have been lucky and have not had any signs that they are lifting.

Re: Ears on Puppy

How do you tape them if this is happening, and how long do you keep the tape on? What kinda tape do you use?

Re: Ears on Puppy

LOL,LOL I know right, I had never heard of anything being done to the ears until today. I thought I was doing good for the breeder having had her tail done already shheeshh. There's always something to learn. I can't wait to get home to her though, I'm counting down the minutes till I get off work. usually when I come in the house and I call out her name from the front door, I can hear her jumping around and moving around in the kennel. Even though i don't wanna overly excite her to pee in there it makes me feel good knowing she's so happy to see me, so after I take her out we get our own play time and I couldn't tell you either what the heck her ears look like...LOl,LOL..

Re: Ears on Puppy

My pups ears are all kinds of screwy. I tried to tape them for awhile, but finally, just gave up. Guess she's stuck with wonky ears.

Unless, of course, you'd like to come and tape her ears for me! Hehehhehehe
