Unhappy Humping???

Hello guys. I have a little question that is perplexing me. My Rott is a10 wk old, nuetured male. Two days ago he started humping his stuff chewable doll, and a blanket. Then last night I was on the ground on all fours trying to get one of his toys that rolled under it, and he latched onto my leg and started humping. I jumped up right away and and said "drop it" because that was the only thing I could thing of. He stopped right away, but then this morning after taking him out, he started following me around and latching onto my leg and trying to hump it as I was walking.

Is this typical of a puppy (I've only ever gotten older dogs, or pups 8 months and up), is he trying to show his dominance over me, or... well, that's really the only thing I could think of. He's a puppy, and he's been neutered, I don't see it being a sexual thing. Any help would be great! Also any tips to get him to stop doing it!!

Re: Humping???

Neutered at 10 weeks?? Wow that seems so young to have a pup neutered.
I do know that Quade started humping at about 4 months and all we do is tell him in a firm voice "No, drop it!" because it's usually his favourite blankie that he humps.

If he's humping it in his crate we don't do anything because that's his space. Not sure if that's the right thing to do but we do not tolerate him trying to hump anything or anyone else. Maybe some of the more experienced members can help you or try doing a search on "Humping".

Good luck with Mr. Lucky!

Re: Humping???

my pup is almost 7 months.....and started the humping activity at about 5.5 months. I am not getting him nuetered, yet, but I will eventually. No plans on breeding him, but just going to do the neuter when he is a little older based on info that i read on this site. All i can suggest is calling him off when he does it.....that's all I do for now. If u figure out something better, let me know. My guy only does it to people.....none of his toys or blankies....

Re: Humping???

I got him from the humane society, and they require all animals to be sapyed/neutured before adoption. Thanks for the advice!

Arrow Re: Humping???

My 6 month old puppy, Gendur, is TOTALLY in love with his cedar-filled costco bed!!! Even if I pick the darn thing up off the ground, he tries to get at it!!! This just started a few weeks ago and even though it is as funny (for obvious reasons) as it is annoying, I keep having to move his bed all the time!! He doesn't do it to anything else, or anyone else. Just that dreamboat of a bed he has!!

Does anyone know if he is going to grow out of this "boy" phase??

Re: Humping???

In my house, there is a zero tolerance for the humping of anything. No toys, beds, other dogs, and DEFINATELY not any part of a human.

Gary did try humping when he was around 10 weeks old also and it was pretty harshly corrected. And yes it is a way for a dog to assert himeslf over the thing he is humping. Females do it also, and even neutered males. Usually it is not a sexual behavior, just a way for a dog to assert hisself.

With a few corrections at the beginning the behavior quickly went away. Now at 6 months it is showing up again, but only on other dogs. Again, there is a zero tolerance for it and when he is caught it is corrected.

There are other ways for a dog to assert himself that are not nearly as rude as humping.

Thumbs up to your Humane Society for desexing all dogs before rehoming.
Kudos to you for rescuing this pup too.

I would never rehome an entire dog. Every single rescue dog I rehome is desexed irrespective of age....though I do prefer they are a little more mature. It's the lesser of two evils. At least these pups don't go on to produce more pound fodder.

I don't allow humping here either, it's very bad doggy manners.

Re: Humping???

Congrats on adopting your new baby from the shelter. I do agree with any rescue or pet being neutered. No chance of accidents, I was just surprised at the young age but understand the reasoning.

I've taken away humpy blankie from Quade and will be sure to also correct him if I see this happening with anything else.

Re: Humping???

It happens here on occasion, and I have two females. But, it usually only occurs when the one is going into or during her heat cycle. I am always correcting, and removing the one girl from on top of the other. It drives me crazy, but I also know it is a dominancy issue as well. But, I do stop them. Thankfully I will have another 4-6 month break before it all starts over again, and they need to be corrected. If anyone has suggestions on how to stop it, I would appreciate it. And, no I am not spaying my intact female, I show her.
