Ears

We have a rott / shar pei mix which we got from the SPCA. She looks like a rott with a sharpei head. So, she had bothr ears folded down, but folded forward instead of the side. All of a sudden one day (she's 14 weeks old this week) one ear is suddenly predominantly pricked and the other still flops forward predominantly.

Is this just a phase? Is this fixable? Or should we just get used to having a dog without symmetrical ears?

Thanks
Sean

Re: Ears

I think you may have to wait and see. My grandmothers jack russell x has one ear that is ALWAYS pricked - the other flops forward 99% of the time. We think it may be nerve damage or something, because it can stand up, it just doesnt seem to be able to do it for long. To be honest, she look rather strange with both her ears pricked - as they seem too big for her little head!!
But then, a lot of puppies with ears that are meant to be pricked will have one ear 'develop' before the other.

personally, i think it looks cute with them being odd (and as you don't have a pure bred dog for showing, i wouldn't think it would be much of an issue?)
I'm very interested to see a pic of your dog - a rott with a sharpei head!

Re: Ears

Here's two pictures of Birna, one with her adopted mother (7 year old black lab), and on showing her ears.

Our friends have an akita with mismatched ears, so we aren't setting any trends this way either. LOL

Re: Ears

my ex-boyfriends jack russel had ears like that, he was so adorable though, i think it just makes them look cute, even when they reach adulthood.

I think those ears are too cute:) I would think they would stay that way but teething is when a pups ears can change.

Re: Ears

Well, Birna's have decided to be symmetrical again, both with a forward flip. The vet did mention that if one decided to prick again, and we didn't want it to, we could tape a penny to the offending ear. Personally, I think one up / one down is cool too.

Re: Ears

Is your dog teething? That can change the ear setting. You may want to try and tape them or massage them. I'm not sure if that will help but if you do a search I'm sure there is something on here that will tell you how to do this properly. If it were my dog, I'd leave them and let them be what will be. It gives her character. She's a cutie.
