Lightbulb Oh my, the jaws on this girl!

Today I bought my adolescent rott a ruber chew ring and she had it in small pieces in half hour! I bought it because it was supposed to be tough! her toys are just consumed so fast and she breaks things down into bits so quick that im afraid she will choke, she is a right goat too,we have already had one expensive vet bill from her eating part of my flashgun : (

Any reccomendations for Rott resistant toys? She is so passionate about toys, but im wary of giving her more in case she makes herself ill...

OH, I feel you on this one! lol! I watch Arthur verrrry carefully with his toys...they just don't last as long as they should! However, he hasn't been able to work his way through a tire that I got at the pet store. :)

what about a strong tug rope toy?? im not that experienced, but maybe that kind of toy will be harder for her demolish and it could be a toy you could play with her?? just a thought. . .maybe people on here with more knowledge will have better ideas??

Re: Oh my, the jaws on this girl!

I find a lot of pet toys labelled for tough chewers to be misleading. The only things I've found for tough chewers that cannot be destroyed by my dog are the chew tires, a kong, cuz balls (but be sure to saw the feet off of them before giving them to your dog), and a Galileao (sp?) Nyla bone. She has a few other toys but their for training purposes, so she only gets them during training time. You also have to be cautious with any type of rope toys, my vet spent hours in the operating room removing pieces of string that caused an obstruction from a dog. He mentioned to me that he's not a big fan of rope toys. But I feel is supervised they should be ok to play with.

Re: Oh my, the jaws on this girl!

The only thing Sheena couldn't destroy within minutes was the Nylabone Galileo - which is the super big bone. She would lay for the longest time chewing on the ends of it! After it got worn down some on the ends I would replace it with a new one.
The one time Sheena got a bowel obstruction was with a rope toy so I never gave her anything like that again - I'm not saying that every dog will swallow the pieces of rope - but Sheena did.
Lot of dogs like the Kong (filled with peanut butter or other goodies) but Sheena didn't like that either.
Good luck finding one that your girl likes...

Re: Oh my, the jaws on this girl!

My dog loves the kong toys and also this bone toy from Nylabone we have had it since Nisha (1 yr.) was a baby. It is so tough! The only problem is the plastic on the ends gets rough; if you have a dog who likes to chew her toys while they are on you, this can be a problem :) I have never tried the "galileo" toy, sounds like I should order one!

**pet edge has toys WAY cheaper that Petco or Petsmart. Here is a link to the "double action chew" from nylabone.

Re: Oh my, the jaws on this girl!

I recently found Tuffies Ultimate Sea Creatures squeeky toys. I got the octopus, the sea snake, and the tiger circle and the sting ray. So far (it's been a couple months now) none of my dogs have been able to destroy them! I've got the big ole' great dane with his huge mouth and tennis ball destroying bite, and the hyper GSD/rottie that can rip out a squeeky before you can blink, and the patient rottie gal who gnaws on the edges of toys to loosen seams, and neither one has managed to open one of them up yet. And these toys are their favorites nowadays. They carry them everywhere and really have tried to kill them to no avail. I got mine at Mud Bay Granary, which is a dog boutique kind of store out here. But I've also seen them on Amazon.

Re: Oh my, the jaws on this girl!

Very large Nylabones, the bigger black Kongs, and the Galileo bone are the only toys we have in the house! Rope toys, other brands of tough bones, sterilized dry bones, Nylabone dinosaurs, all don't last more than a day with my petite rottweiler. It became too nerve wracking having her destroying toys so now we only invest in the really tough toys. Even the nylaknots I have to watch because after a time she gets splinters off and they need to be thrown away. She bit a Nylabone dinosaur in half within five minutes of receiving it.

Re: Oh my, the jaws on this girl!

Huh...the rule in our house if you can't destroy it in five minutes or less IT'S NO FUN! Seriously, Nylabone Galiieo bone last(about 6 months here) alot of chewing excercise! Some easily detroyable stuffies seem to last(my two have a fondness for hedgehogs), why? who knows? They have favorites they like to just "carry"around? Tuffies last about 12 hours of playtime, but they can rip those apart as well, and at $30-$40 a toy we tend to buy the cheaper ones...let them have their glory(a big pile on the floor) and accept it for what it is. Mine are both very good about not eating parts! We collect the pieces and they go trot off in glory. Tried ropes, but they needed assistance going potty...no thanks. Good luck finding what works for you...Tina

Re: Oh my, the jaws on this girl!

yeah nylabones (not the puppy one!) and the tough kongs stuffed are both good.

the rope tugs are good if they are good quality and don't just fall apart leaving stringy bits everywhere! (although the best one we got was from a pound shop!!! it has lasted 4 months so far!!!)

also a basket ball has provided lots of fun and she can't sink her teeth in and burst it straight away!!!!

have fun playing with whatever you end up with.... i think it is fun for them to tear their toys apart sometimes though!!!!

Re: Oh my, the jaws on this girl!

I gave up on ANY chew toy at all. I use marrow bones, or dental balls, exclusively. Interactive play toys are another story.

My girls do have a an outdoor 1' diameter Jolly Ball with a rope thru the middle for carrying. It's not a chew toy but they like it. The rope is gone, but they still play ardently with it. We have kongs of all kinds, including roped and floating ones.

We have a blue rubber football with wiffle like holes in it. It's nearly full sized and is Rave's ultimate favorite! We have rubber frizbees and carpet frizbees. They tend not to destroy toys they "like," including 2 bungee snakes for tugging. We have a nubbly ball and a (both 6-8') Wiggle Giggle ball. Size makes a difference. If the ball is large enough, they can't get a good hold for chewing. Large sized Tennis balls are nice for some, but mine tend to remove the felt.

Lastly, involve your dog in alternative hobbies. A few agility objects in your yard for when you play with them, are always handy. You don't have to become involved full time. Anyone can teach a dog to jump a hurdle, or run thru a tire. Broaden your dogs horizons!

Re: Oh my, the jaws on this girl!

best i've been able to tell with Ozzy, no toy is truly rottweiler safe. we've been through 2 rope bones, but neither one lasted more than an hour or so. the gallileo is ok, but needs replacing every month or so.

um, the largest available black kong stands up ok, but he's been tearing it apart from the bottom up. think it's the longest lasting so far, at 2 months.

good luck finding something that will stand up.

ttfn

stale.

Re: Oh my, the jaws on this girl!

I've given up trying to find toys that they can "play alone" with. as others have said, nylabones and kongs are about all. I'm sure I've bought my dogs every possible toy. the tire biter toy did hold up a while longer than most, but still got chewed up and probably swallowed. good toys to play with the dog with are: jolly balls, holey rollers, high quality rope tugs. I've braided denim and burlap for tugs. we had a rather long and expensive vet hospital stay due to ingested fleece, so toys are, for the most part, things we play with the dogs with.

Re: Oh my, the jaws on this girl!

I was searching the forums for answers to what can't a rottie destroy and found this page. Milo has gone through the Tuffie toy and hard rubber connected rings in less than one day ( I am on my way back to the store to return them today) One toy actually said Battle Proof! Not to Milo, he tore out the stuffing in less than 5 minutes. I have tried rope toys (the rope is NOT digested and I end up pulling the poops out of him, UGH!), the jolly ball has no handle left. I have the large Kong, but of course that doesn't interest him. He loves anything that squeaks, but gets the squeaker out in no time. I might try the tire, see if that works.
