Eye Matter!!

My 8 month old gets that slimy eye matter stuff about every 30 minutes. I am assuming this is genetic. I was wondering if most Rotties have a fair amount of eye matter and if its typical of the breed? Its really not a problem at all but I was just curious...

Re: Eye Matter!!

first, have his vet check out his eyes. any entropion or ectropion?(inward eye lashes/droopy eye lids). any nose discharge too?
it can also be conjunctivitis, and an eye antibiotic might help.

allergies can also cause eye discharge. environmental such as sprays, perfumes, pollen, ect.
usually food allergies appear after the first year, but some diets can cause more runny eyes.(allergy)

No, this is not normal.
Have it checked out by the vet, and if everything is good, I would change to a better quality food. Often food containing, corn, wheat and soya, cause eye discharge problems.

Re: Eye Matter!!

Get to the veterinarian, and get this looked at.

In addition to what others have said, some dogs have environmental seasonal allergies like we do.... goldenrod season, smoke, fleas, etc...

Re: Eye Matter!!

Purina is not a good food to feed. Do a search in the nutrition forum and you'll see lots and lots of premium foods you can feed. Food does have an affect on coat, eyes, gas etc. So just take a look.

Here are the ingredients for the Large Breed Exclusive Adult food:
INGREDIENTS:Chicken, chicken meal, cracked pearled barley, whole grain brown rice,
corn gluten meal, oatmeal, chicken fat preserved with mixed tocopherols (a form of Vitamin E),
beet pulp, egg product, flaxseed, fish meal, natural chicken flavor, potassium chloride, salt,
choline chloride, glucosamine hydrochloride, L-carnitine, vitamin E supplement,
iron proteinate, zinc proteinate, copper proteinate, ferrous sulfate,
zinc sulfate, chondroitin sulfate, copper sulfate, potassium iodide,
thiamine mononitrate, manganese proteinate, manganous oxide, ascorbic
acid, vitamin A supplement, biotin, calcium pantothenate, manganese
sulfate, sodium selenite, pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6),
vitamin B12 supplement, riboflavin, vitamin D supplement, folic acid

Not a terrible food, but it does have corn in it. You may want to move away from anything that is Purina. It may help with the eye discharge? or it may be airborne allergies?

Yes, it's a good food! I would suggest since you are feeding a food with chicken in it now, you try either the California Lamb & Rice, or the Herring and Sweet Potato...it may be the chicken that is causing the eye boogers too.

Thats good to hear...I just so happened to get the Lamb and Rice yesterday!...How many cups should I be giving him a day? He is almost 8 months old and weighs between 70-80 lbs.

Re: Eye Matter!!

My pup is about the age and size of your pup and she's eating 3 cups a day split into 2 meals. I also put a spoon of canned pumpkin in it to settle her tummy.
