Hi Everyone, newby here!!! Need info about showing

Hi everyone, I'm new here to this discussion group.

I have a 15 week old rotty by the name of Jett. What a beautiful little girl she is. We got her a week ago and she is learning fast. We have a 3, nearly 4 year old son, and already she has learned not to jump up, already they have formed a bond. Jett is the 5th rotty I have had, and the first bitch. Our last rotty, Shadow, passed away 2 weeks ago. He never recovered from a torn anterier cruciate ligament, he lost weight, became depressed and started snapping. The vet recommend putting him down as he did an x-ray and found out his hips were shot, possibly from having not used his hind leg for over 6 weeks (while recovering). My son is very happy to have another dog and when we were searching for the right dog for our family (yes we rejected a few breeders and that did not go down well at all, let me tell you...talked about bruised egos), he couldn't believe how many Shadow's there were! He wanted to call Jett by Shadow's name, but we had to explain that there would only ever be one Shadow for us and he's in heaven now. My son wants to go and visit him one day, its so hard to explain to a child that their pet and best friend is gone.

Jett is registered and will also be shown. I am unsure as to how to go it as i've never shown a dog before. Can anyone recommend any books about showing puppies and how to get them to stand and what the judges look for? If she is successful in the show ring, we would like to breed her when she reaches around 3 years old.

I am in Australia and am a Member of Dogs Victoria and the Rottweiler CLub of Victoria. I will also become a member of The Berwick Dog Obedience Club as i would like to do some tracking with Jett.

Anyway, if anyone can help me in the showing process, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Trina

if your breeder shows, the breeder can be your mentor and help you in the show process.
check out local dog clubs. see if they offer conformation(show)training.attend shows, ask questions.
register in a puppy kindergarten to start the socialization process and obedience training.

there are many good books out there. you can search online for books on dog shows and showing.

as to breeding, if she passes all her health tests, gets a few titles, then see how she turns out. enjoy puppyhood...then worry about that later.

good luck with your new pup!

Re: Hi Everyone, newby here!!! Need info about showing

Thanks so much for your help. Unfortunately the breeder lives quite a few hours from our house so getting her help on a regular basis will be a little difficult. Once Jett has her final shots we will be able to take her to the Berwick Dog Club, hopefully they will be able to help me.

We will definately be waiting to see how she goes and how her health check pans out when she is old enough to breed. We aren't definate about that, its just a pipedream at the moment. We have a lot more other important things to do with her, like training and getting her socialised with as many people and dogs as possible.
