Icon10 My puppy sprung a leak

My puppy is 7 weeks now he is doing good with house training but, sometimes he is walking around the house or in the middle of play just stops and squats and pees a drop, like a quater size spot. I was wondering if I should be concerned maybe a UTI? I was thinking maybe it could be marking his territory.
He is returning to the vet on Friday for second round of puppy shots I am going to ask the vet but was wondering if anyone had any advice.

Yeah, he's still a very young puppy who should still be with his mother! Do a search on the forum for "potty training". There is a ton of info for you to read. Also please read all the stickys in the Puppy forum and Behavior forum.

Re: My puppy sprung a leak

7 weeks is about a year too early for him to be marking territory. Get any adult notions about dog behavior out of your head. I am surprised you were not thinking your puppy was defective because he wasn't lifting his leg. Anyway, the pup should see a vet to check his plumbing. He may very well have an UTI. If he does have an UTI, why would you wait 5 days to get him to see a vet? UTI are very painful- you know, burning sensations and all that! The longer you let it be, the harder it will be to house train your puppy. Not to mention him being uncomfortable, unhappy and stressed. None of those things makes for a happy puppyhood.

Yes you should be very concerned that this baby puppy might have a UTI.

Marking his territory at 7 weeks of age He should still be with his mother and litter mates.

Take him to the vet today. Not on Friday. I bet if you had a UTI you wouldn't be waiting unti Friday for medical attention.

Re: My puppy sprung a leak

I'm no expert...but I doubt it's a UTI...it's his AGE! :) Although, absolutely get it checked!
How does this 7 week old know he's supposed to hold his pee in?! Is he even being crate trained? How long is the puppy being let to play before being taken out to pee? How would this puppy have any idea yet if not being crate trained that there are good places and bad places to pee? Plus, how long has the poster HAD this puppy already if this has just started to happen? There is a whole load of info missing here....

OP: why do you have a puppy this young? You're going to have a much, much harder time with teaching this little one about proper interactions with people/dogs since he was taken so early from his siblings/mother! Start doing searches about bite inhibition and puppy biting....and familiarize yourself with all the info you can.

P.S. the "stickies" are the top sections of every forum (like puppy, training, behaviour, etc.). I didn't understand what those were when I first came on this site, but they're the most important info you should get right off the bat in each topic.

Good luck! Enjoy your pup! :)

Re: My puppy sprung a leak

The fact that this puppy is peeing just a drop would indicate to me there could be a problem that needed investigation.

Re: My puppy sprung a leak

Like I said, I absolutely think he should be checked....but if he has free run of the house, how does he know how many other "drops" there have been before that one? Does a 7 week old puppy really hold in an entire bladder full of pee before going - if not crate trained? Has he ever been in a crate where he won't want to pee...and then be let out to pee where he's supposed to? And just how young was he when he got him...if he's now 7 weeks? I was just saying there are a lot of other factors at play here that we don't know about. But yes, like I said, I agree that you should always have the vet check if you're concerned.

Re: My puppy sprung a leak

well i realize that he is very young but he wasn't in very good conditions with the breeder. he wouldn't wait to let him stay until 10 weeks like we wanted. he also wasn't on a very good diet( canned alpo) but that doesn't matter now anyway. we have him and love him to death. he had a full vet visit less than a week ago and is going back friday morning. if i thought he was in any kind of pain at all he would have been at the vet before you could blink. he is doing very well with the crate training( no accidents) and for the most part tells us when he has to go out. what i was wondering was if it was a normal occurance for a very young pup to have little leaks not that he is actually emptying his bladder on the floor. i know that he doesn't have full control and is still learning, i was just trying to see if this was the start of something medical that we could catch before it caused him a problem.
