Puppy Peed While Laying Down??

Riggs is almost 4 months old.

Riggs was lying on the couch. I asked if he had to pee pee and he got off the couch as if to come with me to the back door, but he went and layed in front of the window instead.

I looked and saw wet paw prints all over the wood floor and knew that he had already gone somewhere. I looked everywhere but couldn't find the spot. Then I looked on the couch and it was soaked (but it's leather so it wasn't a distinct pee spot). There were also a few spots on the carpet and on the couch throw pillow (which he layed on in front of the window).

I don't get it? Where the heck did he pee? And how did I not see him? Could he have been lying down? I also had to wash my big pup's bed today cause it stunk like pee - but cannot think of when puppy possibly could have peed on it (but he sometimes sleeps on it)! Isn't it dog's instinct not to pee where they sleep?

He doesn't soil his kennel. Ever. Don't get it. Help me!

some pups do have accidents when we dont take them out on time, so do older dogs. its nothing to be worried about but i suggest that you take him out more often.

OMGosh!! I had the same problem with Gretta! She was laying on the couch with me and just out of nowhere PEED!!! Like it was no big deal. She didnt act like she had to go out or anything! She was right at 14-16 weeks....she is 18 weeks now. She did it like 3 times total. It was the weirdest thing.

She hasnt done it in awhile, but i odnt let her on the couhc because thats just rediculous.

Do you think it is a possibility that he peed while he was asleep on the couch? He may have done it unknowingly. If that is the case, just like with kids, he probably will outgrow it....but it may also spring up again when he is a senior dog. I remember my old fox terrier had horrible bladder control when she got old :(

I have the same problem with puppies and older dogs. if your dog is in his prime and he pees in his sleep then you should worry, for now, be happy

Yea, Gracie has done that a few times too, with the last time just last week. We were up at a cottage and she was just laying outside on the porch, just chilling out, and I saw a small 'river' running on the porch. She was just laying there non-chalont.

She's only 6 1/2 mos though so we're not worried.

If a pup is leaking while asleep I would be taking a urine sample to the vet to check for a UTI. Particularly if this is a new event.

How regularly are you taking pup outside?

Pup is going outside at least every 30 minutes, and then after naps, meals, etc. We seem to have an idea of his routine now. I am almost positive he doesn't have a UTI. And, I wouldn't call it leaking. He definitely peed!

It is 2am and I just experienced the same thing as many of you have. My 9 month old pup was sleeping on the bed and well all of a sudden I notice that the comforter is wet under her. She peed while she was sleeping. I don't get it. This has never happened before. Should I be worried? I am thinking about taking her to the vet tomorrow morning.

I don't think you should be worried unless there are other symptoms - seems to me this is quite a common thing on this forum?

RiggersMum thanks for the reply. She has had bad diarrhea for the past couple days. Then the peeing incident happened last night. So this morning I dropped her off at the vet to take a look at her and do some urine and stool tests to see what is wrong. I have not yet gotten a call back from the vet yet. I will let you all know what happens. Hopefully its nothing serious.

Can't puppies have accidents like human children? Like sometimes they are just too pre-occupied to know when they have to go? Or they don't feel like peeing until a few mins before they have the accident?

Perhaps for the "bedwetters" (who pee when they sleep) Just had a little too much to drink before they fell asleep?.......or maybe they're dreaming of water
