6 month old pees inside sometimes

Angel is being crate trained.

My first question, The vet had me get a urine sample. I got a good one, but didn't refridgerate it and didn't give it to the vet until the next day. Was the urine compromised by not keeping it "cool"?

The vet said she doesn't have a UTI.

She doesn't go potty in her crate.

Here is the scenerios.

Last week I am at my house with a friends 8 year old and we were sitting watching TV and without warning (no sniffing or other signs [that I saw]) she started peeing in the house.

Now normally I am the only one in the house so I am not distracted.

Then again last night I was home alone and she must have given me some signs and I didn't realize and she started to pee and I quickly just moved her outside. Was that correct.

When she does go out I praise and praise...

So a time out of the crate goes like this.

1)Let her out of crate go outside she pees, I praise
2)Go for a walk or go back inside house.
3)Once in house she chews on rawhides.
4)after about 45 minutes she usually wants to go outside to pee..
When I see her sniffing around I take her outside unless it looks like she is sniffing for a toy/rawhide to chew on. Note: she is constantly chewing. Is that totally normal.
5)Repeat #4
Does this sound normal? Am I doing the right things? Also I keep my poor cat shut in my bedroom 24 hours a day because she likes to get the dog excited when the dog is crated and the dog likes to hound the cat if I let them loose together in the same room.

Re: 6 month old pees inside sometimes

I feel your pain, Topcat. I have a 6 month old pup myself and she is not completely house trained, either. It's the same thing here. Just every once in awhile, she will pee without much sniffing or looking around. She also doesn't potty in her crate and doesn't much like to poop in the house. (only did #2 inside once when she was sick with diaherra....and even then ran to the door before her little butt exploded) However, she doesn't seem to mind peeing anywhere she darn well pleases.

I actually just started giving her verbal corrections when I catch her peeing in the house at the advice of someone here because I noticed that she doesn't seem to think it's a 'bad thing' to pee inside. In fact, while she is peeing inside, she'll be licking her chops as if she expects a treat and praise when she's done!

So when I see her go inside (Which has only been twice in the past 2 weeks), I say, "Ah AH!" to startle her. Then I say stuff like, "I am so ashamed of you. Pee outside!" in a really disappointed voice. Then I take her outside and when she finishes out there, treats and praise.

I really don't know if this is going to be what finally works for her or not. I'll let you know in 6 weeks or so!

Re: 6 month old pees inside sometimes

well, it sounds like you're on your way there with housetraining. The incidents you described above sound like you were too distracted or not paying attention - that's why she ended up going in the house. It happens to us all - we just get busy doing something else and the next thing you know, it's all over the carpet! I would give a small correction when you catch her in the act and bring her out immediately (what you did) and praise when she's going pee outside. Just make sure to take her out after eating, playing, sleeping. If she regressing (not making progress), and it's not a medical issue, I would start from square one with her, take her out every hour on the hour. But those incidents sound kind of like isolated incidences, since you were distracted.

Re: 6 month old pees inside sometimes

Zoe is 5 months old and she hasn't had an accident in the house since she learned to ring a bell at the back door. She'll even ring the bell, then if I don't let her out immediately, come to me and give me a look that says "What are you, deaf?" and then go back to the door. Now her Dobe sister has learned to ring the bell too. She cheats though. She also rings it when she hears the dogs next door yapping away outside.

How did you train Zoe to ring the bell?

I taught her to touch things with her nose, then used that to have her touch the bell and whenever she touched the bell, I praised like crazy and then opened the door and went out with her and had her pottie. Even if all she can squeeze out is a few drops, she'll pottie when I ask her to. She'll do anything for a treat. I sometimes think she's channeling Megan, who may have helped her learn to use the bell so quickly.

Riggs will also go potty when we tell him, and he goes outside to pee most of the time. But he doesn't really 'ask' to go out, we still have to watch him like crazy (he's 4 months). If we miss it, he'll pee inside. I was thinking of trying the bell with him.

That hasn't been a problem yet. I'm sure it will be sooner or later, so I'd best be thinking of a solution. So far her preferred playthings are Vesta, me and her toys. At 4 months, I still had to watch Zoe like a hawk, but it seemed like around 5 months, she became much more aware of pottie ettiquette.

I think I've been HAD! I know Vesta has. A few minutes ago, Vesta had a Nylabone (one of 4 in a 5 foot radius) and Zoe was sitting in front of her trying to teleport it. That didn't work, so she went to the kitchen, rang the bell and ran back to the couch and grabbed the Nylabone while Vesta raced to the back door and went out. Guess I'd best start working on that solution.

Nice! What a smartie Zoe is! Hehehehe.

I tried the bell this morning, and little Riggs was so excited about it that he kept trying to paw it/bite it for fun. Guess it reminds him of Santa Claus!
