Unhappy Ear Problems!!!! plz help

I have a rottie thats about 3 months old and i noticed that his ears started to get a little funny. Not so much that they are considered rose ears, but they just dont seem to place themselves firmly on his head like they use to when he was younger.

Should i tape?? I dont want to risk hurting my pups cartilage in the ears or should i just massage?
i hear both help, but i hear genetics also plays a role.
For our first rott, she was about 4 months when we got her and her ears went crazy and now shes 2 years old with rose ears. She is a very strong and playful bitch. I was wondering if I should just do nothing.

I would massage until about 5 months if I were you. At that time (or now if you so choose) you can glue the ears as opposed to tape. It is a whole lot easier, more effective, and less harsh on the ear. A popular brand of glue is "tear mender". You can google it. The bottle actually comes with instructions for gluing the ear.

This product you recommended is designed for gluing leather, fiberglass, etc. not ears. If you look at the manufacturers website it doesn't mention any use on dogs ears. The only link I found between this product and gluing a dogs ears is located below.

Gluing Dogs Ears - Ear Glue - Tear Mender

I am shocked that someone would use this product simply for aesthetics (nothing to do with health or function) on a dogs ears...

Rose ears refer to ears that have a fold in them. The ears don't hang nice, flat, and tight against the sides of the face. Your puppy can have lovely ears, then all of a sudden, seemingly overnight, the ears go every which way. This often happens when adult teeth start coming in. Massaging or taping the ears can help get the puppy through this phase.

So it is the same as "flying ears"?

Re: Ear Problems!!!! plz help

ears go all over the place when teething if you want to massage go ahead it wont help the way the ears lay but you dog will love it . taping does nothing for the ears regardless of what people say . those that had good luck taping ears would have simply been ok if left alone. ear thickness and the way they lay on the head is simply all genetic.

Re: Ear Problems!!!! plz help

Is there anything that can be done once the dog is older? Our rescue girl, Sofie, has one ear like that. She's 4.

I am unaware of a glue that is made "exclusively" for ears. However this product is used all over the world for doing just that. Every bottle I have ever purchased comes with directions attached to the bottle in a plastic sleeve. Sorry you are shocked but show dogs throughout the world have had their ears glued.

It's not all genetic. Some dogs have their ears set higher on the head, some have smaller ears, but also holding the ears back during teething...all can contribute to that crease in the cartilage being in the wrong place. IT CAN BE FIXED on some dogs. I have done it. I have seen others do it. It is a world-wide technique. Once the ear has been that way for a while though you will never get the crease to go away.

"She's a rescue... I wouldn't worry to much about what her ears look like..." Truly I was just curious. Her behavior was our main issue when we got her at 6 mo. Now her orthopedic problem is priority (CCL). But I was curious because she has that one funny folded ear. I had no idea people taped them and stuff until I began reading RDN.

so you think dogs that have high set ears and some with smaller ears arent because of genetics?? if you taped a dogs ears and they turned out fine thos ears would have turned out fine to begin with. and whats your take on ears that are taped and still turn out bad???why dont you go back thru the forems and resurch the 10 million threads weve had on taping ears. the bottom line is its all in the genes
