small head puppy who was almost the runt Hi, i have a 12 weeks old puppy who was the smallest male dog of the litter and third smallest overall(9 pups) but his paws were almost as big as the biggest male. I went to the vet with him this week and he is only weighting 25 pounds at 12 weeks. The vet also said that he will not have a large head as an adult. His mom weights 90 ponds and his father 125. I was wandering if he could be a big dog with a large head as an adult even if he is small at months?

| The head size is genetics...if the sire or dam did not have big heads, or the grandparents...then maybe your puppy will not have a big head. I would not be worrying about head size on a 12 week old Rottweiler. Get your pup into obedience classes and start training and socializing...these are important things for a Rottweiler......not head size.![]() If he is weighing 25 lbs at 12 weeks...this is a good weight. Not all pup's grow at the same rate...some gain weight early and some come from behind and the smallest pup ends up to be the biggest in the litter. I would rather a pup gain weight and grow slowly....it really helps to prevent orthopedic problems in the future. Gina

Re: small head puppy who was almost the runt it sounds like he is a good weight. Like Gina said - head sizes are due to genetics, there's nothing you can do to make the head larger. I wouldn't worry about it right now, there are other things you should be focusing on - puppy K classes, etc. Rotties are not supposed to be a huge breed and they should be growing nice and slow.

Re: small head puppy who was almost the runt Thanks alot for your answers. Well, i already start training my puppy and he is really listening well. I wast just worried about his head size because i saw alot of pics of rottweiler puppies and they had that big large head( so has is a brothers) and i am looking at mine and he has a really slim head. But, his parents got large head, so we will see. I was just wandering if a pup has a head half the size of other pups, can he become with a huge large head has an adult.

Re: small head puppy who was almost the runt Lola was imported from Hungary. We knew nothing about her parents. She started out with a small head, huge paws and long legs. She actually looked like a spider. Most people thought she looked like a doberman. As she grew, her body started to fill out and her head grew to a big beautiful rottie head. Your guy just may surprise you with a nice sized rottie head. Keep telling him what a handsome boy he is and maybe it will swell with pride. All the best. Jane

Re: small head puppy who was almost the runt Oskar is 2 and his head has been doing some growing lately. I think it is way bigger than when he was 1. Enjoy the puppy stage, they grow so fast and it doesn't last long!
