Rotti eating plastic water waste pipe??

Hi,

Any help and advise on the following would be a big help.........

Our 7mth old rotti bitch is a brilliant dog and done very little damage to anything really apart from little marks on skirting boards etc etc...

But past few days when Ive got in from work I found the plastic downpipe coming from kitchen water waste & washer spread over garden chewed to bit's along with garden floaded, I told her off but with out catching her in the act felt I was wasting my time......

I then fixed all connection etc and following day same occured.. I let her have run of garden as its secure and safe with large concrete kennel along with large bed she's only on her own for a few hours a day and gets loads & loads of walks and exercise.

Is the only option to build her a run for her for when we are at work??

Thanks in advance Mark

You're going to have to either kennel the dog, or "kennel" the pipe. If you can fence in the pipe, she's likely to find something else to entertain herself with, so the safest bet is to build her a kennel to hang out in when you're gone.

Re: Rotti eating plastic water waste pipe??

I would not be leaving the dog unsupervised ever. It's clearly not secure and safe if she has chewed through piping. If you can't watch her, get a crate and put her in there for the few hours that she is alone. She's still a very young puppy, she should not be left alone unsupervised at all! She's young, she's curious, so she will get into things. I wouldn't leave her outside either alone. Is she in classes? She needs mental stimulation as well as physical. And when you say loads and loads..how much are you talking about? You don't want to overexercise her and damage her joints.

Re: Rotti eating plastic water waste pipe??

To add to the excellent advice you've recieved about crating your girl, please stop telling her off or otherwise scolding her after the fact.

This is a worst than waste of time--your behavior is training your dog that you're unpredictable and therefore, not to be trusted. Your puppy has no way of knowing you don't want her to chew the pipe. When you get home and see the pipe shredded, all she sees are you in a rage about something. She has no clue and no understanding you're angry about the chewed pipe. There's no connection at all in her mind between the pipe and your anger.

And don't think that because she may cower or look contrite that she realizes you're angry about her chewing the pipe. Your puppy looks that way because she's responding to your anger, nothing more.
