Talking Picking out my boy

Hi all, Hubby and I will be visitng the litter next saturday. We have always had female rotties and now I am finally getting my boy! Yippee. Can anyone give me any advice on living with a male rottie? We have choice from three males. They are so dang cute, I want to take them all! LOL But alas, just one will be coming home. Any advice would be great. Thank you in advance!

Your breeder should be making the choice of which pup would fit into your home the best. What plans do you have with your pup? are you planning on competitive obedience, therapy work? herding, tracking? This should all be part of the decision that is made.

I love the boys, and I think the most important thing is to get enrolled into Puppy K , and keep on taking classes, or some sort of activity with your new boy. They love to learn and enjoy working...and as long as you keep their minds and bodies busy, they are no more problems than females.

Thanks for the reply! Yes, breeder is fantastic! He has been keeping me up to date on their temperments, weights, eating habits etc. Based on what I am looking for, he says he has an idea of the one for me, but will see in next few weeks. I am looking for a happy, well adjusted new family member. We are already signed up in obedience class for October already! It's important.

Re: Picking out my boy

If the breeder of these puppies hasn't asked you a bazzillion questions about such topics as your dog experience, your lifestyle, your goals and aspirations for your new Rottie, talked to you about food, the importance of early socialization, and training, you should give serious thought about not visiting the puppies.

If you're a couch potato type person, for instance, whose idea of a good time is watching TV or reading or sewing or other sedentary type activity and you pick the puppy who comes running up to you, that puppy may grow up into a dog whose energy dismays you.

Good breeders know their puppies inside and out and they work hard to understand the people who buy their puppies so that the match is a solid good one. Even in the best of circumstances there are going to many bumps in the road of Rottie ownership. It is most unwise to make the relationship more difficult than it needs to be.

What reason did the breeder give you that any of the 3 male puppies would be the puppy for you?

Re: Picking out my boy

Hi again
Just spoke with him again. He said they are doing great. Sent me more pics. Love them! I actually wanted a male as I have had the pleasure of two females in the past 23 years. I love the breed and will never have any other. I guess I will just have to wait and see which pup we click with. I cant wait to have our family enriched again by our rottie.

If you love the breed as much as you say, I hope you did the right thing and researched the breeder up and down.

There are few Rottie breeders, but more Rottie puppy producers than you shake a stick at. How to separate the wheat from the chaff--how to determine COE, responsible breeders from the masses of everybody else--has been discussed extensively in the Breeding forum here at RDN. You would be well advised to spend time reading thru the postings.

Alas! You likely didn't do very much research at all re: the breeder from whom you're thinking of buying a puppy.

Because if you did, you'd never have posted the above.

Re: Picking out my boy

I have not chosen my pups. The breeder has always chosen for me before I met the pups. When I did go to see them the breeder picked up a puppy and said to me "This is your puppy". She chose well.

Re: Picking out my boy

Good morning all,
Angelbunny, with all due respect, I feel you are a bit hasty in your judgement of me and my situation. I don't feel I need to explain myself or my knowledge in choosing a rottweiler breeder. I have owned rotties for over 20 years. I am extrememly happy and comfortable with the breeder I have chosen, and to be perfectly honest, he & my pups sire are very well known and respected. Including on this board. I understand rottie owners defenses when it comes to people welcoming rotties in their homes as there are so many uneducated people out there who just want one because they "look cool" etc. And just as many BYB who are willing to sell pups to them. But I am not one of them. With that being said, I will continue to post, read and look forward to all the helpful information I will aquire from this board and it's members. Especially when my boy comes home.

Re: Picking out my boy

Well excuse me!! Having your butt handed to you wasn't for you....it was for the breed!!! But you wouldn't understand that, yet. Meaning if you stick around and "listen" to what experienced people on this board are trying to explain to you and others, you will learn a lot and the breed of our choice, the Rottweiler will be in a better state of affairs.

As for DMarie, I don't believe AngelBunny was being hasty at all. The question you asked and what you are stating sounds like a person who's very inexperienced with this breed. She was trying to protect you from future grief. So be it......continue on in your quest for a Rottie from this breeder. I wish you much luck. And yes, please stick around and post all about your pup, six month to 2 years from now. We all will be very interested in hearing all about him and his health and temperament.

Re: Picking out my boy

good for you DMarie. this site has some hard core show people and breeders to average guys who simply love the breed and arent as meticulous, yet are very weary of the breeds needs. each one teach one..

Hi again all, Thanks for the replys! And yes, you will be hearing plenty of stories, and seeing lots of pictures as my boy grows and matures. After all, isn't that what this board is all about? Learning, sharing, and the love of the breed. Now....hubby and I just need to agree on a name! LOL

Re: Picking out my boy

JoJo and AngelBunny, it is your cruel and condesending statements that cause people to not feel like they belong to the GOOD ROTTWEILER OWNERS group, what makes you both so perfect.
I personally don't see anything wrong with choosing between 3 pups, the breeder will be there to help them I'm sure, DMarie has already stated she has had Rotties for 23 years, probably before either one of you were born. Now let's help welcome DMarie and I'm sure she would not consider a pup any less than what her past dogs were.
Why don't you two put your energy into helping insted of cutting people off.

JoJo... I think that Marylou Mader put it best... what makes you so great? You might have a lot of time with the breed, but I really don't care what you think or have to say. I was not complaining in any way. I think the one who needs to "look and Listen" is you. If you "look" at what I said, I SAID "I KNOW WHY." I always take everything that I see here as good advice, but at the end I will use what I think is best. I have been around dogs for a very long time and know what works and what doesn't. The only reason why I am here is to expand that knowledge because I believe that there is never enough to learn, there is always someone who knows a bit more. I come here to learn and people like you always comes down like a hammer, nice. That's the way to teach people and protect the breed! Good for you, I guess that's the way you were taught when you were younger. No offence, you must be old school military or a military brat. SORRY DRILL SAAARRRRGEEEEENT!!!!
