Problem with my puppys ear. He seems to be developing some sort of crease in one of his ears, when i first got him they both layed down flat across the sides of his face perfectly , now one of the ears is starting to crimp up a bit i think hes doing it on his own cuz when i take it and flatten it out it stays normal for a few mins then he crimps it back up a bit, its hard to explain it still hangs normalls just it folds back a bit and u can sort of see the inside white of his ear. im not sure if this is because he is growing right now or maybe he hit his ear? any ideas what could casue this? thanks.

| Re: Problem with my puppys ear. many pups, especially with thinner ear cartrilege, between 3-5 months go thru this. especially goes along with teething. what we do to avoid permanent creasing, we tape them a few days at a time until this phase goes thru.(usually a few weeks, on and off). it works best in dogs under 5 months. i use kendall waterpruf tape 1". i do what i refer to as the upsidedown bucket head. i start on the inside of one ear, bottom chin strap to the other inside ear, and then the reverse by the outside flap. if your breeder has experience or you know a handler or vet who has done them, they can show you how.there are a few methods. by the way, it is not detrimental to the pup to have a creased ear. it's just cosmetical. more of a thing if you are showing the dog.

Re: Problem with my puppys ear. Shelby has "flying ears" as well, but since she's nowhere near a show dog, we don't mind.

Re: Problem with my puppys ear. this taping method, the dog seems to just rip it off with his feet when he scratches around his ear not too sure how well this will work, so it wont just go away with time? and it can be permanently like this if it is not fixed?

Re: Problem with my puppys ear. How old is your pup? You normally start to see "flying" ears around the time they start to teeth. We use moleskin (for feet) putting a piece inside the ear as a brace and then another small piece on the outside at the back of the ear to crease. You need to check for irritation regularly and should replace every 3 -4 days. We also massage our puppies ears several times a day when he/she is teething. This is a great way to bond with your puppy, have him used to having his ears handled, and the puppy loves it as well! If you do not intend to show your puppy you really don't need to worry about it - the "flyaway ears" are not harmful in the least to your puppy. But to answer your question they will not just 'fix' themselves.
