Post Small puppy

I just got my puppy. He will officially be 8 weeks old in 2 days. I just took him to the vet, and everythings good, but he only weighs 6.4 pounds, and they didn't have a problem with that.

I know all dogs mature differently, and I've seen these threads:

http://www.rottweiler.net/forums/chi...ppy-adult.html
http://www.rottweiler.net/forums/chi...ppy-adult.html

No other dog seems to be this small. And I saw one of his brothers at the breeders place and he was the runt, all the other dogs were supposely the same size as my guy. And I saw the parents and they were both good sized rotts.

He had 5 brothers. Does that have to do with his size being small right now? I'm just looking for some reassurance, just because everyone elses dog seemed so much bigger

Re: Small puppy

Are you talking to your puppy's breeder about your concerns? The breeder of your puppy should be the very first person to whom you turn when you have questions, concerns, or need reasurance.

Re: Small puppy

I haven't just because he is an extremely well behaved, good looking, healthy dog (vet backed all that stuff up), and like I said I know all puppies mature differently...and really I dont think his size is a problem, I am just hoping someone has a similar tale that they can tell...I don't know I guess I just hadn't really said anything on this site in a while, I guess I just wanted to say something, and looking to hear what everyone has to say...but thanks for the advice bunny, if I have any real concerns I will definently get ahold of the breeder.

Re: Small puppy

After I wrote my last reply, I ended up emailing my breeder :)

but I am still interested if anyone else has a similar story or can relate to this, thanks.

Re: Small puppy

That does seem a bit on the small side - the last 8 week old pup I saw at the breeders (I'm hoping to get a pup from her next litter) was about 15lbs if I'm remembering correctly. My toy poodle weighed 3.4lbs at 8 weeks, this rott pup is only a few pounds heavier at the same age!

Re: Small puppy

When Gretchen was about that age she weighed over 12 lbs. Did you see this thread? It turned out the dog was small because it wasn't as old as the "breeder" initially said it was.

Re: Small puppy

Daisy was 12 pounds at 8 weeks; her brothers were 14 lbs, and her sister about 13. Your pup sounds small for really being 8 full weeks.

Post Re: Small puppy

He is on the small side.
Most Rott pups are about 12 to 18 lbs or so by 8 weeks of age. Female pups tend to be on the smaller size. I think Baxter was about 14 lbs when we picked him up from the breeder?...and he was from a litter of 10. He was average sized out of the litter...neither the biggest or the smallest.

What size were the sire and dam?
What did the breeder feed your puppy? What are you feeding it now?
Has the pup been wormed regularly?

Gina

Re: Small puppy

I asked the breeder in the email what size the sire and dam were. She told me what she fed him, I forgot, I feed him Canidae life stages, yes the pup is getting wormed regularly.

I am still waiting on the reply email.

Re: Small puppy

Logan was 7 pounds at 9 weeks. He is now 3 years old, 80 pounds and 22 inches. So he did stay small, but he isn't viewed as a small dog as most people think his bigger than my 15 month old, 95 pound dog.

Did you get your pup from a COE breeder?
Did the sire and dam have OFA numbers for hips, elbows, eyes and heart?
What titles did these dog have?

Both sire and dam seem oversized to me.

Re: Small puppy

According to the specs I'm looking at both those weights are inside the appropriate size.

OFA Excellence on both. Sire was a german import...unless you're going somewhere with this and the OFA could have something to do with his size, I really would prefer not talking about this again...can titles have to do with a puppy's size?...I appreciate all the input I'm getting, but like I said unless OFA and titles have to do with the pups size can we please keep on topic, thanks.

I was asking about OFA's because if the puppy comes from a BYB, that may be the answer to your question of the small size of your pup. Most people that buy from COE breeders have met the dam and sometimes the sire...and usually know the size of them and the pedigrees on both sides. Breeders usually give you a 5 generation pedigree with the puppy package.

I'm asking about titles, because if they both got their Championships, then they must have good conformation and be the right size. If they are oversized....they would not have their CH.

We have alot of new members that come here asking questions about their new pup's...and they think they have bought their pup from a "great breeder". The more questions we ask....the less they know....and it often ends up that the "great breeder" was a BYB that knew all of the right things to say.

I'm hoping that your pup grows up strong and healthy.

Gina

Re: Small puppy

Both of my litters (totalling 20 pups combined), the puppies have ranged from 13 - 20lbs at 8 weeks old. Jewel was a smaller female puppy and at 8 weeks she was just under 10lbs (she is now 80lbs and 23 inches tall at 5 years old).

He seems a little small to me .... but I know things can vary.
