| We love our new addition to the family but finding nights difficult and it is causing arguments with DH and myself. I am a teacher and home for the summer so during the day I am constantly with her in and out all day, training, playing, and short puppy walks in the backyard or to the end of the block. Nighttime comes, she is out cold by 9pm she usually sleeps to 11 maybe 12pm when she wakes for peep number 1 maybe do a #2. between 1-2 up again for another peep falls back to sleep for a couple of hours and her waking time is between 4 or 5am an occasional 6am. DH and I are exhausted. He stays with her at night when he is off from work but it is really throwing us off and causing friction in the house with these sleepless nights. Is this normal puppy sleeping pattern? How long does this last? WHAT DO OTHER PUP OWNERS DO THROUGH THE NIGHT? Am I caving in when she whines? When DH takes her out she tries to play at 3am I tell him no just put her back in the crate and he says she cries. What to do? Aside from the occasional puppy nipping she has been great but these sleepless puppy nights are rough..please help with any advice??? THANKS!! |

| How old is your puppy? It does seem like you are getting up a little too much with your puppy. Crying and carrying on in the crate is all part of puppyhood. ![]() I think getting up once during the night for the first couple of weeks is all that is needed. Once the pup is about 10 -11 weeks old they can usually make it through from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. or so. It is stressful to have a new baby, and it's stressfull to have a young puppy....but they do grow up quickly and if you want to train them not to urinate in their crate...the it's best if you take them out. Do you take up the water by about 8-9 p.m.? If you take away the water, and take the pup out by 11 p.m., they should do better. Cover the crate with a sheet...or at least one end of it...this often keeps them quiet longer. Have fun, and enjoy! ![]() Gina

| Re: When will my pup sleep through the night? My puppy is 10 weeks old and she's sleeping through the night. I take her out at 11:30-midnight for the last time. Then, she's in her crate until 6am sleeping peacefully. We'll got outside around then for a really quick pee. Afterward, she's usually still tired, so she'll plop herself back into her crate and sleep some more until around 7:30 and then it's breakfast time! |

| Re: When will my pup sleep through the night? I appreciate the reply. Jasmine will be 11 weeks by the end of this week. I will try the sheet tonight. She is fed dinner at 5pm and we usually take up water by 7pm and she is still going thoughout the night. I think someone (of the puppy kind) is trying to con us. I would like more experiences but I am now thinking she is trying to get away with going out all hours of the night. She takes to the crate and goes to sleep but nighttime seems to fall and she is in and out. Any other sleepless puppy parents?? please share your stories!! |

| Re: When will my pup sleep through the night? A pup ought to be able to "hold it" for at least 6 or 7 hours at night by the time he is 10 to 12 weeks old. During the day, if he is active, he'll have to go out every few hours because he is drinking and excited. But at night, pick up his drinking water after 8. Take pup out about 11, and once puppy is in his crate after his last trip to the yard, the lights are turned off, maybe cover his crate part way to eliminate drafts and light, and pup stays there until his master gets up. Ignore whining. If your pup really has to urinate more often, have him/her checked by the vet to rule out a urinary tract infection. Just like human babies, these little critters figure out really quickly how to get attention. Enjoy your pup.

When I first got my puppy, like you, I was up all hours of the night taking her to pee. Seriously, I took her out every 2 hours on the dot. I thought I was going to keel over and die from the lack of sleep. Then, after about a week of that, I just said, "Screw it." I set my alarm for 6am and went to sleep. She whined a little, but I ignored her. When I woke up at 6am, I was surprised to find a completely dry crate. Let's just say that was the end of MY night shift. I say let her stay in there one night for a good 6 hour stretch and see how she does. I bet she'll be fine. |

| Re: When will my pup sleep through the night? Where is the crate? The issue may not be that she needs to go out, but that she is lonely. The crate should be in your room, and close enough that you can reach out and touch her, IMO. This is not for everyone, but I do not use a crate for night-time housetraining, I trained my last puppy and am training my current puppy by having them in bed with me (this is how their breeder trains hers), and it has worked wonderfully. My new puppy is 11 weeks old today, she has been here since Friday, and she has slept through the night (8 hours plus) every night so far.

| Re: When will my pup sleep through the night? Maybe a 5 PM supper leaves her a little hungry at night. Can you hold half her supper until around 8 or 9? Then she will still have a comfy tummy after her last potty trip.

![]() I think the OP should know that your puppy is a Nottaweiler ...and will not grow to the size of one. ![]() I had great success...having puppy sleep in a smaller type of crate that was right by my bed for the first couple of weeks. We had a crate set up downstairs also during the day if needed....but the night time crate worked out well. They do like to be close to someone during the night and sleep soundly. Gina

| Re: When will my pup sleep through the night? Yep, my dogs are Nottweilers, but even so, I think the crate should be close enough to the bed for the owner to touch the dog (and I would probably even raise a Rottie pup in bed for the first few weeks while gradually transitioning to the crate, I don't agree with just shoving a pup into a crate the first night, but that's me )

| Re: When will my pup sleep through the night? Hi! Thanks again! Well, we are still sleep deprived. The other night I gave her food at 9:15pm hoping she would sleep and maybe she was hungry. Jasmine wailed and DH took her out, she did #'s 1 & 2. Then again at 4:30 but when back to sleep to 7am. That was sleeping in but still distrubed. Last night, DH took her out at 1:30 and then was up playing with her again...DO THEY KNOW who the push over is? DH says that I am the general with her. I am just strick and stick to the rules. I would never play with her in the middle of the night. I came down she went right to sleep. Tonight we will try to keep her up again. We took her for a drive in the car to keep her up. It is rough but I am leaving for FL tonight see other post, I feel horrible leaving but this trip was booked before baby came along. :( |

| Re: When will my pup sleep through the night? Everyone in the family needs to be consistent with this pup! This pup needs to be on a schedule asap! You should have times when you feed her, not "when you think she's hungry" feed her in the morning, noon and evening (or whatever schedule you come up with). If there is no consistency with this pup, she'll grow to learn what she can get away with. Rotties need to know who is boss! Feed her dinner, take up water at 8pm or whatever, take her out one last time maybe 10-11pm and in the crate she goes. Maybe get up once to let her out at night, once she goes potty, back in the crate she goes. Period. Things will not get easier if DH is taking her out and playing with her at 1am. That's why she cries and whines in the crate, because she knows she'll get let out and get play time. |

| Re: When will my pup sleep through the night? WOW! Shelby since you are not in my house I don't quite think you understand the schedule from ONE post. We feed her 5:30, 1, and 5pm. based on the above post I tried to feed half food at 5:00 then another half at 9pm. SHE IS AN EXCELLENT DOG!!! I am a teacher and very strict with my students which has carried over to my dog being VERY WELL TRAINED and is only 11 weeks. aside from the occasional "puppy" stuff they do which is why I come on these forums for HELP AND ADVICE! I never had a puppy before, let alone a Rottie. DH had a Rottie growing up but never helped in the training area, as you can tell. LOL Dh did take her out of the crate when we got her to play, which was QUICKLY corrected. Last night I come down at 4am and he is talking to her telling her to be quite...which is what I tell him NOT to do. It is not "playing" but he should be encouraging her with verbal talk, even if it was telling her shhh and quite. Just thought I would clarify myself a little so you would better understand :) |

| Re: When will my pup sleep through the night? This is what I would do, block off part of the crate so that she has enough room to lay comfortably but not enough room to pee in one part and sleep in another. Rip newspaper into long strips to absorb any accidents and spread a large towel outside the crate in case she does pee so you can wipe her down when you bring her out. I don't see anything wrong with your feeding and water times. I would take her out 1 last time as late as you can and get up and let her out as early as you can. And finally put your head under the pillow and ride it out. If you ignore her whining it wont last as long as it does when you keep getting up. I also would not put her in the bedroom. Also with you going out of town and your husband working 4 night shifts this might just take care of itself. |
