| Re: When will my pup sleep through the night? you are coming here for advice and I'm giving it. I'm sorry if it's not what you want to hear, but that's what this forum is for. You said in YOUR post "gave her food at 9:15 hoping she would sleep and maybe she was hungry" well, no wonder she has to go outside 5 times a night! If you're feeding her that late, she'll have to go #2 soon after. Puppies are like babies, they NEED a schedule. From YOUR post you said "DH took her out at 1:30 and then was up playing with her again" so sorry if you don't like the advice given. We're trying to help you with your pup so you will have a well socialized, balanced dog when she matures. Even if you're doing right by the dog, it doesn't seem consistent - ergo, it won't work because puppy will know how to get away with things. So both you and DH need to be on the same page. |

| Re: When will my pup sleep through the night? My dog was in his crate all night at 7 weeks old. He was in another room far away so we wouldn't hear the whining. He messed the crate (pee only) for the first 4 weeks I'd say then he held it all night. |

| Re: When will my pup sleep through the night? Thanks! I am sure with me going out of town and DH working nights these will be long nights for her so hopefully this is what she and both DH and I need. I do appreciate the help but I think saying I don't have her on a schedule is incorrect. I was taking advice from another poster about letting her have food at 9:15 we did it that night but it didn't work. She still went out middle of night. I will let her whine tonigt and see what happens since I won't be around the next few days she will have to survive nights alone. Thanks again for all help!! IT IS GREATLY appreciate and DH and I are obviously learning about puppies and Rotties at that. Thanks! |

| Re: When will my pup sleep through the night? Your puppy is whining and crying in her crate because you have proven to her over and over again that she will get attention if she does. You have got to ignore your pup completely when she cries. It doesn't matter if she's hungry or if she has to go to the potty. She has to learn that crying and whining is the not going to get your attention. Only talk to her when she's being quiet. Praise her like crazy when she lays in her crate nice and quietly. I won't let my pup out of her crate (even to pee) until she lays down and hushes her muzzle. It took less than 3 nights for her to catch on that crying and whining wasn't an effective way to get my attention! |

| Re: When will my pup sleep through the night? I took the advice on here and when I woke up she had done peeps looks like at least 3 x's. I had to use 4 towels to clean it up. She also left me a present of the #2 kind. She yelled, hollered, and screamed but I put her in at 11 and left. She started screaming her head off at 12:30, 1:30, 3:30, and finally I got up at 4:45am....LONG NIGHT! I have a renter downstairs and I mostly kept her quite cause I felt bad and I KNOW he was up the night too :( I am leaving today so she is on her own but thanks for the help anyway and hopefully when I come back she will be into her schedule. |

| Re: When will my pup sleep through the night? I ALWAYS start a new puppy off at night by using a crate in my bedroom. This is just my personal opinion, but I think it's wrong to isolate a new pup in another room all by itself at nite in the beginning. A new pup has been around it's littermates/it's mother/people since the day it was born, and I don't agree with suddenly isolating it at night. I feed the pup in it's crate from day one, so it starts getting used to feeling comfortable in the crate. My pups always get used to the crate in a hurry, and the whining doesn't last long...but I think it helps the bonding process to have the crate in the bedroom at nite, especially in the beginning.

| Re: When will my pup sleep through the night? DO NOT let your puppy get into the habit of messing in the crate (by not letting him out regularly) - this will make housetraining nearly impossible, since housetraining is based on a dog's natural instinct to keep the den clean. By forcing your puppy to over-ride this instinct, you are taking away the single most important factor in housetraining. And I agree with Skip, isolating a puppy is a bad idea.

I think they've created their own problem by isolating the pup...and never allowing the pup to settle on it's own. This is why breeders that start crate training before the puppy goes to their new homes should be applauded. Baxter was started at about 5 weeks of age during the night (with a couple of his litter mates in each crate). When he came home to us, he was already familiar with a crate...and not such a big deal for him.I agree...a crate beside the bed does wonders to help them adjust and settle. Gina

| Re: When will my pup sleep through the night? Perhaps the real issue is letting the dog out when it carrys on more than getting up at night to let her go pee? If you do wake up and she's carrying on - I would just wait uintil she calms down to take her out. No dog can carry on like that FOREVER. Also if it's the separation that causes her to carry on then a crate in your bedroom and crating her during the day at short random intervals (especially when you know she has just relieved herself) and letting her out when she is quiet might help out some. The thing about house training is that you need to set your dog up to NOT have an accident the added challenge of crate training is that you need your pup to accept the crate as their "place". We didn't have the soiling problem but our guy came to us at 9 months I'm guessing, having never been in a crate! we feed him in there, I'd move the crate around the house and put him in there while I was cleaning my room (of course you ahve to leave once in a while) or even in the living room if I was watching TV to help him learn that the crate was NOT evil and that he could survive if he wans't on TOP oof me.

I feed my last meal at 5pm and then pee/poop at 5:15pm. I pull up the water around 8:30 and pee right after that. If she gets thirsty after 8:30pm, I give her an ice cube here and there. Then, she pees again at 10pm and AGAIN at 11:30pm. After her last pee, I put her in the crate around 11:45ish. Then, she's fine until 6am. Also, to get her used to the crate I fed her all of her meals in the crate. I keep all of her toys in the crate. I hide little treats in there. If she happened to fall asleep on the kitchen floor, I would pick her up and put her in the crate and let her sleep in there with the door open a couple of times...and then I would start closing it on her. If she cried in the crate, I would completely ignore her. But the SECOND she got quiet, I jumped in with a, "Oh Good girl Maddie! So quiet in your crate!" and I'd give her a treat. I keep her crate in the living room, but for the first week, I camped out on the couch to keep her company. Now, she usually conks out almost immediately after I stick in there, so I can sneak off to my bed. Now, my puppy voluntarily sleeps in her crate. She'll drag her exhausted little body in there every time she wants a nap without any prompting for me whatsoever. |

| Re: When will my pup sleep through the night? The dog obviously has to go though, its not as though its faking it, she woke up to quite a few messes, at least one of those "screaming fits" the dog really had to go out. I agree completely that the dog should be able to hold it by now, maybe there is more than meets the eye, the pup maybe should go to the vet to check on a bladder problem or other issues. |
