testing a good idea or not?

While I know and everyone knows that i absolutely do not intend on breeding Valentine, I was wondering if it is a good idea anyways to get him Offa'd? What else should i have him checked for?

Re: testing a good idea or not?

It's never a bad idea to get hips checked, both for your breeder's education, and so that you are aware of any hip issues you might need to be careful of in what you do with Valentine - you can wait until he's under anaesthetic for another reason (neutering, dentistry, whatever) and have them done then. I'd also at least get a cardiologist or at very least a cardiology-interested vet give his heart a good solid listening-to, heart problems are all too common in Rottweilers.

Post Re: testing a good idea or not?

Since your Valentine comes from poor breeding I would get his hips and elbows x-rayed. I don't know about sending them to OFA? is he even registered with the CKC? I think they have to be registered dogs to go on the OFA site?

This will at least give you peace of mind and you will know what you may face in the future.

Has he been neutered yet? Have him done when he needs to be put under for something.

ANY dog can have it's x-rays submitted to OFA for review and inclusion in the database http://www.offa.org/faq.html#3. In Canada there is also the OVC hip certification http://hipdysplasia.ovc.uoguelph.ca/CaseSubmission.cfm
