Size of puppy collar and puppy travel crate

I was wondering what size buckle-style collar I should buy for an 8 to 9 week old Rottweiler puppy? I bought a 14-inch collar, but it seems small when I look at it.

I also need to know about what size crate would be appropriate to bring our puppy home in. We will be traveling by car and the trip will be approximately 12 hours long. We are going to break it up into two days. I was considering a crate that is 24L X 18W X 21H. The 22L x 13W x 16H looked a little too small. Once we get home, I have several different sized crates to house the pup in.

Any advice, opinions and suggestions welcomed!!! (The fact that I have to ask these questions tells me it's been waaayyyy too long since we had a pup in the family )

Probably a 16 inch collar, maybe even an 18 inch. Just remember 2 fingers should fit sideways underneath the collar. As for as the crate goes a 24"D x 21"H x 18"W should be fine as it is meant for dogs up to 25 pounds, and at 8-9 weeks he should be basically that size. Good luck with the long road trip. Remember water, food, bowls, towels, and stop to take lots of potty breaks.

luvmybts, What kind of Rottweiler are we talking about here? Emma is 13 weeks old and weighs 25 pounds. She is considered to be a "big girl" according to our vet who specializes in large breeds, especially rottweilers. Emma's mother weighs 110 and dad weighs 140.

Fenris was 13.5 pounds at 8 weeks, and is now 74.6 pounds at 7 1/2 months, so he seems pretty well within standard. I'd be kind of amazed to see a 25 pound 8 or 9 week puppy. The crate size sounds fine, although we ended up just holding him in our laps for the 4 hour trip home, so you might want to keep in mind that if he gets upset, that would probably be more reassuring than the crate while driving.

Oh and bring baby wipes, they are great for cleaning up messes...when you don't have access to a tap.

gofoit, i said "basically" that size. All of the rott puppies I have known are around 15-25 pounds at 8-9 weeks. And i'm not talking BYB dogs, im talking show/working breeders who breed to the standard. Basically that size meaning a crate meant for up to a 25 pound dog, which that crate is, is the correct size.

I always have liked the adjustable buckle collars for my guys as pups. They grow so fast that it seems like every other day you need to loosen it. If you already have a 14, buy the 18 too, eventually you'll need it.

I'll buy another collar. I purchased the 14" from Jeffers. It is excellent quality, but inexpensive. I intend to get both food and water from the breeder to ease the transition. I have bowls and towels on my packing list as well as toys, dry flow pads, and first aid kit. I'll add the baby wipes. This breeder does a lot with their pups so I'm hoping the puppy will travel well.
Luvmybts, we are getting the puppy from a COE breeder and the pedigree is heavy in working lines. I sure want the travel experience to be pleasant for all. I sincerely appreciate everyone's help. Thank you so much!!!!! We're open to any advice.

Well ma'am, I hope your patient The bitch was confirmed pregnant by ultrasound 2 weeks ago so we have a bit of a wait (10 weeks) until we'll be bringing the little one home. We are soooo excited and are trying our best to maintain our own patience. It took us nearly a year, several phone calls and a LOT of research to finally find what we were looking for in both the parents and a breeder. Going on my experience, great breeders are hard to come by. I pray every night that the rest of the pregnancy goes well and she whelps the pups without any issues.

A little bit of info on the pedigree: Rick, Noris, Vico and Ferro von der Teufelsbrucke.

P.S. I know we still have awhile to wait, but I figure the more we plan, (just like in our search for a pup), the better prepared we will be and the greater chance things will go well.
