Thumbs up Cage for bed good or bad ??

Hi,

Just picked my little baby "rossi" up last sun she's 11wk old and a stunning example of the breed........

I keep her in a large cage when I go to bed at night save getting the house trashed till shes learns what she can & cant chew, is it a good idea i just get worried it may effect her mentally being locked in there or Im I just being silly?????

Mark

Re: Cage for bed good or bad ??

I'd really suggest you read through the sticky threads! There is so much information to learn here, and will answer many of your questions :)

BUT Yes! Keep her in her kennel at night. A smaller kennel would be better, just so she learns not to potty in there. Our Vegas is 11 wks old as well and she's in a 25"L x 19"W x 22"T kennel and its perfect! She has enough room to be comfortable and turn around, but not enough to get away from her accidents (and so far she hasn't had a single accident in her kennel, yay!).

We also kennel her when we're eating dinner and when we're not home. She also goes in there to take occasional naps when she's tired. That's her "bedroom" where everyone leaves her alone when she needs a puppy nap :)

Its perfect to keep her out of trouble when we can't keep an eye on her, and also is a place where she feels safe and protected. Hope that helps! and good luck with your pup :)

Re: Cage for bed good or bad ??

Agreed, crating a pup is a GREAT idea. It's their 'den' and don't want to mess it up. It's great for housetraining. But I think she'd do better in a smaller crate - there are some large crates that have dividers so you don't have to buy a new crate every time she gets too big for it. Shelby was crated when she was a puppy - at night, when we're not home, or when she couldn't be supervised. We haven't had to use the crate since she was about 1 year old (roughly) and we could trust her to be out by herself.

Re: Cage for bed good or bad ??

Lola was crated at night until she was fully house trained. Once she scratched at the door to go out, I left her crate door open and she could come and go as she pleased during the day. I think she was about 5months when we packed up the crate for good.

Re: Cage for bed good or bad ??

my girl is 9 months old and we still crate her when we leave and at night. she is not mature enough, or trustworthy enough to be left out alone to her own devices (plus i like my house intact). she loves her crate SO much that during the day she goes in it just to take a nap, with the door wide open.
