My dog pees!!!

This is the first time I've posted yet I've been viewing this site for a while and would like to say thank you, you have all been great help. Now I hope that you can help me with my problem.

She 14 weeks old and she pees. I got her when she was 9 weeks old, and have been working hard on house training.

I know that her going is good, but she does it in the crate, on the floor and outside. She was getting good with going outside, and starting to try and tell me, but that stopped. Now, she will go in the crate and not make a sound until she doesn't want to sit on it anymore. I take her out very often, and come home during work to let her out. She just came off antibiotics for a UTI, do you think that this has anything to do with it? I would think that regardless she would want to let me know before she goes.

When she does go outside I make such a big deal out of it, like she just got a promotion or something. I can use any suggestions, as this is getting fustrating!

Thank you for your help!

Re: My dog pees!!!

Sometimes a UTI is not cured by one course of antibiotics and sometimes a different antibiotic is needed. My girl needed two courses of different a/biotics to clear up her problem.

I would take her back to the vet, with a urine sample. It sounds to me like she is still having problems.

I also suspect she still may have the UTI.
If she was good about going outside, and now goes in her crate, etc., it most likely is that she is not rid of the infection...or it has restarted again.

It's almost impossible to housetrain a puppy if they have a UTI....they cannot help where they are peeing...and have no control over it.

Re: My dog pees!!!

I haven't had any experience with a pup and a UTI but we had an older adult rott that had frequent problems with UTI's, I could always tell when something was brewing because he would start to have accidents in the house. Always ask the vet to do a urinalysis after the antibiotics are completed to make sure the infection is gone. Good Luck

Re: My dog pees!!!

I agree with everyone. Take the pup back. Our old brittany got one and it was impossible to keep her dry! we also had to do 2 rounds of antibiotics to get rid of it!

If you've ever had a UTI yourself, you know what the pup's going through... and they don't understand what's wrong like we do!

Post Re: My dog pees!!!

UTI's can be caused for many different reasons. Sometimes not letting the dog relieve itself often enough can cause one. If the urine sits in the bladder for too long a time, too often....then bacteria can start growing in the bladder. Take you dog out to pee and encourage her to pee as often as you can.

Diet may also contribute to UTI's.....the food can make the urine too acidic or alkaline and cause crystals to grow in the urine...this irritates the bladder...and an infection can start.

Some females really like to squat when they pee...and if they touch the ground...they bring back bacteria to their urethra and bladder...and that can cause and infection.

There are also some females that have not developed their vulva properly...and the urine catches on it, and sits and that can also cause an infection.

I'm sure there are other reasons for a UTI, but that's all I can think of for now.

Re: My dog pees!!!

We had the same problem with our male when we got him in October. We had him to the vet twice to check for infections, both times he was negative. We had him in a tiny area in his crate at night, took him out so many times to potty during the day and night we lost count. He still went number 1 in the house on a regular basis. When he was around 4 months we got a small bell and hung it on the door knob and every time we took him outside to do his business we bumped the bell with his nose. It only took a week or so and he was ringing the bell by himself to go out and potty. I really think he just didn't understand what we were asking of him. We have had no accidents in the house for months now. (Knock on wood!!)

Re: My dog pees!!!

DaveS: Did you have this problem in the crate as well as in the house? She doesnt often go in the house, yet when I'm at work and leave her in the crate for NO longer then 3-4 hours she goes. I have heard of bell training and wanted to start, I guess now is as good of a time as any.

Diet has been brought up. I feed her Wellness Super 5 for puppies (chicken) and have heard its a good food, yet I never (on this website) hear people talk about it. What does everyone think of that food? Her coat is one of the most beautiful I've ever seen, and I attribute that to the food.

Portia:

Our pup went in his crate also. He always had a wet spot in the morning when we woke up. Sometimes he had only been in there for 2 hours.

Re: My dog pees!!!

I too would go back to the vet with a urine sample. This winter Bear got a UTI while we were away on vacation. As far as I can figure, stress was the main culprit and the vet says that that is entirely possible.

We went through 4 weeks of antibiotics and had a unialysis done after the first course and after the last course to make sure it was gone for good. Since, he's been on the same food and done fine we also take extra care to make sure he drinks enough water by adding it to his kibble each meal.
