Thumbs up Rottweiler puppy not eating.

Hello, I am new to this forum and I am looking to see if some one can help me with my puppy. This is my first rottweiler, and I have heard that they are more delicate than other dog breeds. My friend gave me this puppy. He is six weeks old and is been with me for four days already. The first day when i brought him home he ate just fine, he was also getting along with my 4 year old chihuahua . But after the first day problems started, he stopped eating the food i was giving him and was only drinking water. He started with diarrhea, so I called my friend to see what kind of food he was giving him, my friend told me that he was giving him Pedigree with fat free milk. So I did the same thing, but the puppy was only drinking the milk. Yesterday I stopped by Petsmart and asked a representative for some advise, he suggested to give the puppy the brand Nutro and mixed with canned food. I got home and proceeded to give my puppy what they told me at Petsmart. The puppy cleaned the bowl and I was amazed, but this morning i saw him vomiting the food he ate last night. It was weird because there was still pieces of dry food in the vomit like if he is not digesting the food correctly. He is just laying down and only gets up to drink water. I was worried that he might dehydrate so i gave him pedialyte with a syringe. When i was giving him that i could hear is stomach growling. The diarrhea he is doing is brown liquid but no blood. I am afraid that he might be getting Parvo but my friend told me that before he gave me the puppy he administer the Solo-Jec 7 vaccination. I tried putting food in his mouth but he rejects it, the only thing he is taking is the pedialyte and water. Any advice is appreciated. Rick

Re: Rottweiler puppy not eating.

Take him to the vet. Sometimes, the vaccines you buy at feed stores don't get refrigerated properly and lose potency. Also, even if it was good, that's only one vaccine... they aren't fully proctected until they've had a series of vaccines. A puppy that young can die pretty fast with diarrhea... I'd get him to the vet right away.

I am working at this time, and my wife doesn't drive. I am taking him to the Vet tomorrow morning, I just hope is not too late, and hope that the Vet clinic is open. My wife is giving him 2 table spoon of Pedialyte every hour to keep him hydrate. Do you guys think he is getting Parvo.

Get him to a vet ASAP!!!!
There is something very wrong with this pup.
He should still be with his mother, and it sounds like he came from some BYB.
He may be full of worms, or it could be parvo, or gastro (by changing his food too quickly), or he may have some birth defect and cannot digest food.

He needs to be seen by a vet.

I am taking him to the Vet. tomorrow morning. My friend told me that he also gave him a pill for the worms. My friend kept two puppies for him and those are doing fine and they are not with the Mom. I just hope this is not Parvo.

Working or no... this puppy needs to see a vet right away. Chances are that he wont be alive in the morning.

Can you wife not get a friend or neighbour to drive her and the pup to a vet?
Can she take a taxi?

This pup may not make it to the morning...at 6 weeks of age, they can die very quickly.

Re: Rottweiler puppy not eating.

I just got out from work and on the way to the house i stopped by the food store and got two cans of Gerber. I gave him the half of theGerber by a syringe and he ate all, then i put the other half in his bowl and he ate from the bowl. It seems like he like the Chicken flavor because he clean the bowl. After he ate all the Gerber I gave him two table spoons of Pedialyte. He is now walking inside the house. Tomorrow morning I am taking him to the Vet. What could be wrong with him.

Re: Rottweiler puppy not eating.

Well, my puppy at this time is walking and running around the house, drinking water by himself and also asking for food. Last night he stayed inside the house, he slept by my room and at three in the morning he was asking for food. I gave him half of a Gerber can, then at seven in the morning he was asking for more food, so I gave him the other half. He still got diarrhea, the Vet opens until twelve, so I am going to take him at that time. Can this symptoms be that he is starting with Parvo.

Also I have two daughter a 4 year old and a 18 moths old and they like to be around the puppy, touching him. Can this be bad for them, is Parvo contagious to humans.

Glad to hear that he is feeling better.
Where do you usually keep your puppy? Do you plan on keeping him outside?
Please rethink about raising your puppy outside . Buy him a crate and crate train him, and make him part of your family.

If he has parvo, humans cannot catch it from him. Do a search on parvo to find out the facts.
Have you notified the "breeder" of this pup that your dog is sick?
Please get him to a vet asap.

Re: Rottweiler puppy not eating.

I just came back from the Vet. At the clinic they ran different test. He tested negative for Parvo . The doctor told me that he got a bacteria in his stomach and that's what causing the diarrhea. They put some fluids in him, and the doctor prescribe some medication to threat the bacteria and some dietary supplements for food. He also told me to give him 6ml of Pedialyte every hour. They were not able to put any shots on him so I am taking him for a follow up in three days and if he is doing better that when the doctor will start with the shots.

Re: Rottweiler puppy not eating.

I was just wondering how your vet came to the conclusion that your puppy had a bacteria in his stomach? Did you take a stool sample in? That is really the only way that these things can be diagnosed. My other concern is that at this age, he wouldn't be ready for a second booster shot. Are you sure this Vet knows what he is doing?

The Vet came to the conclusion because he took a stool sample from my puppy at the clinic. The Vet. did some other test on him. He also told me that the shot my friend give to my puppy at five weeks was just a waste, that the time they recommend is six weeks.

The Vet. told me that in order for them to put the booster shoots, he needed to control the bacteria that's causing the diarrhea and he schedule me for a follow up in three days.

I am following every instruction the Vet gave me. I just finish giving him food right now and I am giving him fluids every hour.

Re: Rottweiler puppy not eating.

oh man...i'm so sad right now. Do you know that puppies NEED to stay with their mother until they are AT least 7 weeks old? YES that extra week makes a HUGE difference! god i cannot type anymore...i am sick of breeders breeding dogs for only money and putting the offspring thru hell just so they can make a quick buck!!!

Re: Rottweiler puppy not eating.

Hello Rflow50,

My puppy, Bessy, and I had a really rough first few weeks together. Like yours, she had diarrhea, and very poor appetite. My anxiety turned to panic when she vomited.

Turns out, Bessy had Coccidia - a bacteria in her intestines that affects her appetite and digestion. The poor girl had to undergo a series of jabs, IV drips and staying in the animal hospital until she was better.

Am glad to say, today she's doing GREAT.

You did the right thing by taking her to the vet's. But I think you will need to check with your vet about whether your pup's first booster shots are any good, seeing how sick he was.

Bessy had to undergo a series of blood tests before my vet would let her continue with her 2nd vaccination. If she had failed her tests, the vet would have re-started all her vaccinations.

Also, if your pup is sick, it's not a good idea to let him have any vaccinations. The vaccinations carry live specimens of the virus (or something to that effect) in mild dosages so a healthy pup can build immunity.

Please double triple check with your vet before you put any vaccinations in your little boy.

I can totally understand how you are feeling now. But just hang in there! With the proper care and love that he's getting, he'll be A-OK!
