Puppy Running

I've been reading post regarding keeping puppies from runnning. How am I supposed to do that? We play and train in the house in a room 12x22 and he's running. we train and play out in the yard and he's running. He's 4 months old and 42 lbs. He doesn't run constantly but when he does, he does.
I'll make him sit in the back of the yard (75 feet or so) and go to the house then call him, and he runs to me, why is that so bad? he's a puppy.
I've read about the growth plates, but how am I supposed to get him tired? (A tired dog is a good dog....and that's the truth.)
Can someone explain the peramiters of this running issue?
thanks

Re: Puppy Running

I'm not sure what post you're referring to, but the rule about puppies and running is about FORCED exercise. Puppies run, puppies leap, puppies get the zoomies....usually in short bursts and then it's over. As long as you take care to prevent him from hurting himself by bounding up and down stairways, sliding around corners, leaping off hillsides (my puppy actually DID this one when she was 12 weeks old and on a long line nonetheless ) and that kind of stuff....what he does of his own volition should be just fine.

You can direct some of that energy into short daily training sessions, too, and by exercising his little brain he will get smarter and more relaxed.

Re: Puppy Running

I think thats referring to actually making the pup run. Puppy running on his/her own is different.

Re: Puppy Running

I think I know the thread you are referring to and it's like moondog said. Forced exercise is the issue. Someone was talking about how long should the walk for a puppy be, and my understanding was it depends on the age of the dog. Also, if you can get him to sit stay while you walk 75 feet than you must be doing something right. Way would anyone tell you this was wrong? Like Moondog said, just watch those slides, corners and such. And I would also add weather conditions are an issue as we approach the summer heat. Sometimes puppies don't know when to stop. And with these black coats the heat can get to them. Other than that, just let him be a puppy.
