Spaying

Gabi is now 5.5 months and I have avoided taking the vet's advise so far in getting her spayed after reading and much researching. My last girl was a German Shephard and she was spayed at 6 months and was plagued with a myriad of bladder infections and what not. I don't want to put another dog thru that. At any rate, can any of you direct me to a good site on how to handle the mess? I probably will keep her crated more and baby-gated to the room we hang out in the most (actually its three rooms in one) where the floors are not carpeted. Do the britches work? Are there items out there to help? All my girls have been spayed so I'm not sure of what the stores have to offer in getting us thru this time.

Re: Spaying

With both of my rottys (10 yr old now gone) and my 4 yr old now, I used the britches with(human) panty liners. They worked great the dogs can go any where in the house and I never had any accidents or messes. The liners they give with the britches dont work well. also used before i found a good pair of britches the depends for humans, works like a diaper and has more coverage.

Re: Spaying

Thx, Brinabear! How did your girls handle the britches? Did it take some time for them to accept? Did they try to rip them off? I'm just wondering how the Gabster will take to wearing them as she is a little terror lately.

Re: Spaying

With Lola, we used tights. Leggs XL. I cut off the legs to about 3inches down on each side. Lola stepped in and up they went over her back up her belly. I cut a small slit for her bun. The tights are strong and cling well to the dog. No slipping down. I placed an thin maxi pad in the tights. This covered all her leaks. I changed the pad when ever she went out to do her business when the tights were removed. Lola didn't seem to mind this at all. She actually didn't realize the tights were on after about 2 minutes. A spare pair was ready all the time. You can always try the britches first but just in case, I thought I would add this.

Re: Spaying

Now that you ask i realized that my girl that is gone didnt come inside that much till she was older, and my 4 yr old now, because of a medical condition(thyroid) she just had her first heat and she didnt bother with the britches to much. That might be tricky with a 5 month old, but she will get used to it, I like the idea of Lola Marie with the Leggs(didnt know they still make them). Good luck

Re: Spaying

I have owned quite a few bitches that were not spayed until after their first season. Most of them kept themselves clean except for a day or two of heavy bleeding where I had to keep them in the kitchen. I am hoping this will be the same for my Emma. The only one I had problems with was a Boxer from a so called championship bloodline. She went into heat at 9 months and never came out. There was no controling the flow. So we took her in for ultrasound. Turns out she had two cystic ovaries and an enlarged uterus. Of course she had to be spayed immediately. But I would be interested to hear from others with Rottweiler bitches. Have any been able to keep themselves clean?

Re: Spaying

I'll definitely try the leggs . . . you should have seen my husband's face when I told him about it I just want what is best for Gabi; hopefully she will keep herself clean. If not, at least I have a plan. My parents bred Weimaraners and it was messy so that was my only experience with a dog in heat.
