Is it too young to start training My new rott pup is about 9 weeks old and I was wondering when we should start training her. When does a rott pup get old enough to begin some mild training? I'm looking to start with housebreaking, sit, stay, and come. I would appreciate anyones help with this. Thanks!

Re: Is it too young to start training you can start training for ALL of these things now. notice i said start though. these things will take time, and incredible amounts of patience and persistence. please do a search on potty training and commands, i am sure you will find all the advice you need to get started. are you going to crate train your new girl?

Re: Is it too young to start training Please do start training now, before the pup learns the wrong things on her own. Young pups learn very easily as long as the teaching is done in a gentle, fun and positive way. As long as your pup has had some puppy vaccinations you could start in a puppy kindergarten class.

Re: Is it too young to start training I can agree with the others, we started training at about 8-9 weeks with just the basics. Nothing to hardcore just rinse and repeat of the basics. Now, he can come, sit, stay(sitting and in the down position), Paw, find Mommy(in a different room). We are still working on "Leave it" and no Bite although he does respond to those commands it is not consistent. We never had a problem with housebreaking as we had him on a schedule early on (eating and going out) I can count on my hand the number of acidents he had and those were primarily my fault. We started on the down command while we fill his bowl we have a scoop of food, tell him down, fill his bowl, then have him stay in down until we finish with the bowl he then gets the good boy and knows he can eat). Just remember to have LOTS and LOTS of patience, it will pay off in the end :) Ohhh yeah Crate training is a MUST (at lest for us) :)

Re: Is it too young to start training We started training our pup at 6 weeks of age (just at home though, as no fraternizing until 12 weeks). He knew his name already, so come wasnt a problem. Sit took about three 10 minute training sessions over three days - i did use leftover christmas turkey meat which i think was a big help! Stay was the only one we had problems with, due to his always wanting to follow us everywhere, but we perservered. 9 weeks is definately not too early, just remember that small training sessions are the key, so they dont get bored, and you dont get frustrated!! Static is our first Rotti, and i'm not sure if we are just very lucky with him, or it is just an extremely intelligent breed, as he learns very fast!!

Re: Is it too young to start training I don't think it's ever to early to start training. In fact before pups even leave for their new homes I feel the breeder should have already started some basic training. So start right away! :D Just keep things simple and training sessions short. If the concept isn't getting through, don't force it......end the session and try again later on. I'd also suggest for commands, teach only one at a time. Once you have one solid command, then move on to another. But always use the commands that have taught on a daily basis. I also suggest taking puppy training and socialization classes!

Re: Is it too young to start training Do your training in everyday situations. By keeping your sessions short 1-2 minutes and doing them in normal everyday situations, several times a day, she will learn things that much easier. Have her sit to get a treat, then when she's getting consistant, sit to eat, sit to go out the door, etc. Start down-please do it from a stand-and then you can substitute down for some of the sits. Also teach "look" or "watch me" as these are very important. Once sit and down are happening, then add stay. Every time you add something, up the reward. Get her in a puppy class, some will let you in as early as 8 weeks. And search for "clicker training" as I think you will find your very smart pup becomes even smarter with the clicker!!! Good luck and have fun.

Re: Is it too young to start training Ok, Now this is an area I can really talk about with confidence since I used to teach dog obedience, and my son trained Rottweilers for the US Army. I usually start with the basics as soon as my puppy comes home. Manners is the big thing for me. That cute little puppy is going to grow very fast. The two things you want to stop right away is jumping up on you and play nipping or chewing on you. ALWAYS use the word OFF if your dog jumps up on you. Never use down, as that will be a different comand later. I use a strong deep NO, with a quick tap on the nose for nipping. Then be ready with a toy as a substitute for your skin. Above all, be consistant, and praise, praise praise. I won't get into the other commands as you should really get to a good puppy class. My Emma is 9 weeks old. She knows off, sit and stops in her tracks immediately if I say no. Hope this helps.

Re: Is it too young to start training I would definately start some training now. I do a few training sessions a day for about 3 minutes each. My pup is 11 weeks old and has the sit and shake hands down very well. They learn pretty fast at this age.

| Re: Is it too young to start training Puppy training is all about fun, fun, fun. Most importantly redirection from what they are doing that is naughty, to what you want them to do. It's never too early to start forming behaviors, it's way to early to start "expecting" results though.
